Cairo to Luxor and Aswan

Hi There!

Me and my boyfriend are going to Egypt in April and I am trying to book us train tickets in advance. One of which being the overnight train from Cairo to Luxor.

I cant find more than 2 sites that will allow me to do this ; one won't load on my computer the other seems to only give me the option of leaving Giza...?

Is the Cairo station named "Giza" or do we actually have to travel to Giza to get on the train to get down Luxor?

Also - I have read that it is better/safer for foriegners to take overnight trains in Egypt however I know that the trip to Aswan from Luxor is only a few hours. Is it still okay for us to take that trip in the morning? And if so, should I also book those tickets in advance?

Thank you for any and all help!!!

the official web sites for the egyptian trains are as next

for the regular seated trains is

https://enr.gov.eg/ticketing/public/login.jsf

this site is in both english and arabic language that you can control from the upper corner of the web page in case it opened in arabic for you

for the sleeping wagons train is the next site

wataniasleepingtrains.com/Watania/Home.html

tourists are allowed to board very specific trains from Cairo to Luxor and Aswan or vise versa and they are all night trains starting from 08:00 pm till about 10:30 pm for all seated and sleeping trains

booking can be done 15 days only in advance

all trains do NOT depart from main station in Cairo, this is a rule applied since several years ago that all trains departing to Upper Egypt to be starting from Giza station

Giza is not far from cairo , as Giza is considered to be a district of the Great Cairo the Capital of Egypt, so just a taxi ride will take you to Giza Station

for the trains for foreigners to go from Luxor to Aswan touists are allowed to board some day trains and they all run in the morning

wish you a nice trip and wish the above info are helpful

"I am trying to book us train tickets in advance. One of which being the overnight train from Cairo to Luxor."

If you're talking about the overnight non-sleeper service, ignore the above advice about all trains departing from Giza. You can catch these trains from the main downtown Cairo railway station (Ramses).

You can book online non more than two weeks ahead at enr.gov.eg.

I'm not sure about the sleeper service.

"I have read that it is better/safer for foriegners to take overnight trains in Egypt"

It's perfectly safe to take a daytime train. Again, these can be booked in advance at enr.gov.eg.

"I know that the trip to Aswan from Luxor is only a few hours. Is it still okay for us to take that trip in the morning? And if so, should I also book those tickets in advance?"

It's fine to take the morning trains to Aswan from Luxor. You can check the timetable at enr.gov.eg but unfortunately you can't book tickets online. You'll have to purchase them in person at Luxor railway station, which you can do in advance.

This is ALL incredibly helpful information! Thank you so much!

So we shouldn't have any problems booking a ticket from Luxor down to Aswan the day of then?

Also, I have tried enr.gov.eg and when I fill in the search criteria (even when I fill it out for two days from now) it is telling me there are no matches.

This confuses me a bit...?

Anyway, Thank you both again SO much, i really appreciate all the help :-]

"So we shouldn't have any problems booking a ticket from Luxor down to Aswan the day of then?"

I doubt it, but why not buy the tickets a day or two in advance to be sure ?

"Also, I have tried enr.gov.eg and when I fill in the search criteria (even when I fill it out for two days from now) it is telling me there are no matches."

I don't know what can be going wrong; I'm looking at the schedule for the Cairo to Luxor trains at the moment.

Have you registered with the site and are attempting a test booking ? Or are you just trying to view the schedule ?

What error message are you getting ?

I do not think for ignoring the fact that trains departing to Upper Egypt start from Giza and not from Cairo can be a good advise as very few trains to upper egypt can be taken from Cairo main station (Rameses) which are the whole country train that take from Alexandria to Aswan.

the Police put regulations for touists travelling by trains for security reasons , mentioning some daily overnight trains to be the ones with police escort on board train, in the stations most of time they do not sell tickets from Cairo to Luxor on daytime, and probably will be asked on board the train to clear who sold you a ticket on a train without a police escort, it happened to me before by a mistake of travel agency with some of my clients, so I am telling you something that happened in reality, public trains are open for every body , so the police on some of the night train their job is to make sure that no one of the public may annoy or harm a tourist

ALL sleeping trains going from Cairo to Aswan they do not even pass by Rameses station , they come straight from catering and cleaning service to Giza station , so even in Rameses Station is the head office for Wataneya to book sleeping trains but tickets are always issued starting from GIZA station

as I mentioned in my prev post that for the trains to go from Luxor to Aswan you can have a day train, it is not a prob.

if they search and booking engine do not give a match may be as your travel date is still not in the 15 days range of bookings available

"very few trains to upper egypt can be taken from Cairo main station (Rameses)"

According to the schedule at enr.gov.eg, there are departures from Ramses station to Aswan via Luxor at 0005, 0800, 1200, 1900, 2000, 2200 and 2315. It could be wrong I guess.

"in the stations most of time they do not sell tickets from Cairo to Luxor on daytime"

The easiest way around this is to buy the tickets online in advance. I've used the daytime train a couple of times recently without any problem.
