Abu Simbel or Dendera/Abydos?

If you could only choose one due to time constraints, would you advise seeing Abu Simbel or visit Dendera/Abydos? Why would you pick one over the other? Thanks in advance for your advice.

Hi Nancy, have you done both? What makes you choose Abu Simbel?

Abu Simbel takes more time and really should have an overnight stay to see the S&L show

See pics at flickr.com/photos/…

But, if time is of the essence the other two get done in a day from Luxor easily

PIcs of these are at flickr.com/photos/… and flickr.com/photos/…

Abydos has the wall of Cartouches known as the Abydos King List and Denderah the Zodiac ceiling

They are not comparable as it depends where you are starting from. Dendara and Abydos are a day trip from Luxor by road or Dendara by boat. Abu Simbel is several hours each way by convoy from Aswan by road or a flight via Aswan.

Dendara is a Ptolemaic temple comparable IMO with Edfu or Kom Ombo in terms of interest. Abydos is superb New Kingdom but the police often limit your time there and not all the site is accessible. Abu Simbel is impressive IMO mainly for its size and location in the desert.

pS If I am not mistaken the zodiac ceiling at Dendara is a copy and the original in the Louvre!

Yes, the original Zodiac ceiling is now in the Louvre.

If the question - Abu Simbel or Dendera/Abydos - is not merely rhetorical, the choice may be determined by accessibility. Abydos, possibly also Dendera, may be temporarily off-limits to tourists.

Simply if you will be staying in Luxor , then it is better to do a tour to Dendera & Abydos and If you will be in Aswan then better to do Abu Simble . Good Luck

Not sure if the OP is still wondering, but perhaps they are contimplating hitting one or the other as an add on to a Nile Cruise. They have one day to add to the trip, and can either add the day when they are in Luxor or in Aswan. Just a thought...

All other things aside (such as transport), the Temple of Hathor at Dendera is a delightful place to spend a whole afternoon, sit outside eat your lunch, explore some more. Abu Simbel is impressive for the size of the statues outside but you are in and out of the two small temples and not much else to do. It is in an artifically constructed mountain on a slab of rock. Hardly a place to sit and chill out.

Abu Simbel is interesting historically from the viewpoint of Rameses II. Dendera is charming, delightful etc and has the beautiful story of Horus and Hathor connected with it (good to see the Horus temple, Edfu, at a similar time, which you can also do as a side trip from Luxor).
