Please Help: Is Cairo, Egypt Safe to Travel Now Summer 2013

Hello,

My boyfriend and I have a trip planned to Cairo, Egypt. We are of American nationality & wanted to do a 4 day trip to Cairo, just to see the pyramids. We will be going on a tour program for all days we will be in Cairo. However, we are worried about going due to political unrest. We are very excited to go, but we do not want to put ourselves at any unnecessary risk. It would be greatly appreciated if experienced travelers can provide us with honest advice! Thank you.

Cairo is fine. There is nothing going on now, and even when there is, it is in small areas and easy to avoid. There is no general danger to tourists or anyone else who is not trying to participate in a fight.

All recent reports are reassuring. Nowhere in the world is without risk, even in the US

Even in the US indeed. I know I am FAR more likely to be a victim of violent crime at home in New York or Chicago than here in Cairo.

As someone just pointed out on the Sinai forum to me recently, you cannot be 'absolutely' safe anywhere. But Egypt is much safer than most countries as far as violent crimes are concerned - I don't know about the US, but definitely safer than the UK (talking from experience). Being American is not a problem, even the hardliners I've met stress that they have problems with the government, but not its citizens. Egyptians are very welcoming and friendly. Nevertheless people should take care and avoid big gatherings and so, but if you are going on an organised tour that will be taken care of.

Hassle is a common annoyance, people trying to sell you things and so, but that can be dealt with with a firm 'shukran' and walking away. Single women might have negative experiences, especially in big cities, but that's only verbal and is not relevant in your case.

It may not be relevant here since the OP is an American, but for UK residents we MUST go by the dictats of our FCO at https:/…egypt else our travel insurance and any other insurance becomes invalid.

Yes, it may be safe for 999,999 people out of 1,000,000, but if you are the odd person and are from the UK, then you are in trouble

Tourists have been kidnapped in Sinai (even if they were released unharmed - you do not go on holiday to be kidnapped) and they were kidnapped BECAUSE they were tourists - - where it is more dangerous in the other countries you mention, it is dangerous for everyone, not just tourists.

I agree the vast majority of tourists will see and hear nothing in the way of trouble. That does not mean that UK tourists can go, unless they are happy to have no insurance cover.

P.S. Where is your location 'In Motion'?

First of all, this was a question on Cairo, so I'm not sure why we are talking about Sinai. Secondly, I have always found it a bit depressing when someone posts one of these messages and then a dozen people from the UK are like "dear god HAVE YOU CHECKED THE FCO.....travel insurance invalid!!!!11!....you MUST NOT go!".

I'd be pretty upset if my government told me I could not go somewhere (I guess the exception there being Cuba, which is absolutely ridiculous). Maybe the difference is that lots of Americans don't even have insurance.

You really wouldn't accept a 1 in a million chance that something bad would happen to go somewhere you want to go and see something spectacular? I'd say "better not leave the house" but actually most accidents happen there, so I don't know.....

I could write the opposite - there is a small group, based in Egypt, who are probably working in the travel industry, but don't show it in their profile, who keep saying 'It is very safe' (#9 may be an example)

I merely try to provide some balance and point out that it doesn't matter what non UK people can say or do, UK residents, if they want to be insured, have to go by what their FCO states.
