train to Luxor

I am traveling with my family to Egypt in the second half of January 2010.

can someone tell me how essential is to book in advance to get a first class seat on the day train from cairo to luxor. How far in advance will we need to book?

And.. what is the quality of the first class seats like on this train. I know the night train is very luxurious but we dont want to pay that price and we also would like to travel during the day and see the countryside.

appreciate any advice

Hi Jone

You can book tickets before your trip by one month, but if you are coming during the high season, its better for you to book 2 months before, anyway depneds on the month your are coming in.

About the day train, i dont advise you travelling during the day, the sun is strong and the weather is warm, even if the train is airconditioned. You can use www.egyptrail.gov.eg or www.egypt.gov.eg

Do not take the train unless you use the sleeping service. First class trains are OK for 3-5 hour trips. Beyond that it doesnt work.

All those I know who went against that advice, regretted it.
