If you are visiting with a guide, then they will take you around the museum in a way that will enable you to see many of the well known objects on the ground floor, before moving upstairs to visit the Tutankhamun & gold galleries.

This normally takes about 1.5 - 2 hours so, if you have actually got a full half day to visit, this should allow you the time to do a bit more exploring of the collection, either with or without your guide, & so have the chance to see more of the collection than is often the case with the standard guided tour.

If you aren't visiting with a guide, it's really best to get a good guide book; preferably dedicated to the museum, illustrated & with a reasonably up to date map of the galleries, & plan ahead what it is you really want to see & where you have to go to do so. (Having said that, the displays & temporary exhibits are constantly being updated or moved, so any guide book can only do so much.)

The real problem is that the museum's collection is so vast that you could spend months wandering around, trying to see everything that is on display, & still not manage it.

The main thing is to enjoy your visit.

Glen is right, half a day is more than enough. Obviously you cannot see everything the museum has, not even in half a day, but I daresay you will be pretty tired after the first 2-3 hours anyway.

You can read this review of the museum:

tripadvisor.co.uk/ShowUserReviews-g294201-d3…

The museum itself is not that big, it just feels big when you wander around there, loosing track of where you went and what you saw. But it has more stuff crammed into it than any other Egyptian collection in the world, so if we are talking objects, then yes, the museum is big!

Don't worry, half a day is more than enough.

Yes, half a day is enough as it is very hot and poorly displayed.

It is worth getting a guide for an hour at the entrance to orientate yourself, then you can look round more on your own.
