Cairo security escort reason

I am starting to research tour opportunities in Cairo for June. In looking at a number of posst on TA as well as tour company websites there are references to tours being accompanied by security vehicles. Can anyone tell me the reason for this need? Is it about being stopped and robbed or is it a terrorism threat or is it something else altogther? Is there a particular area(s) that this escort is perceived to be neccessary? I am planning a 2 day private car trip starting in the port in Alexandria and ending at he Cairo port.

This is an old rrangement that was made by the government during the times of terrorist attacks in Upper Egypt during the 1990s and the arrangment has not been abolished yet although the last time an attack happened there was in 1997!

It covers travel on a limited number of roads in Upper Egypt only. Cairo and Alexandria and all roads between them are not affected.

So, don't worry.
