4 Days in Cairo with 4 year-old

We (wife and I and 4 year old boy) have a 4-day stop over in Cairo on the way back to the US from India in September. Do the seasoned TripAdvisor travelers have recommendations for itinerary?

We are thinking of staying at a hotel in Zamalek.

Is it reasonable to try and do a day trip up the Nile or is 4 days to short?

Is there an interesting day train trip to take from Cairo?

I'm guessing that booking a pyramid visit from the hotel would be expensive; other options?

Also: Traveling from India, will we need to show a record of any particular vaccinations?

Thanks for any help!

Edit: should note we will be there in early September.

Zamalek is a very nice area to stay but so are others. Even if their running, you wouldn’t have enough time for a “long” Nile cruise from Cairo. Cruises of as little as two or three days sail between Luxor and Aswan but you still don’t have the time.

You could simply take a taxi to the pyramids (lots of people do or at least used to), but for a hassle-free, family day out, you may want some sort of guide-package to help fend off the touts and hucksters. There are loads of local travel agencies which can arrange a day at Giza and/or Sakkara and Dahshur but the hotel’s deal (depend' on the particular hotel) probably wouldn’t be terribly more expensive A day’s train trip to Alexandria is may be your only practical rail choice but you can easily hire taxi/tour car for a ride into the delta and/or to the Suez Canal.

I'm not sure if arrivals from India need proof of certain vaccinations. Check with embassy/consulate web site.

I don't usually recommend guides and tour packages, depends on what kind of travel you like of course, but agree with BBeckett, hiring a driver at least for a few days is pretty affordable, and saves a lot of hassle. You could browse through the "things to do" tab up top then "activities" for tour companies, get in touch with one or two, then at least have a price to compare with what the hotel you book says. But yep it is totally possible to do everything on your own or book tomorrow's activities today, etc.

The standard day trip from Cairo is Alexandria, which is nice. Depends what you're interested in...there's enough here to keep you busy for that time as well. Personally not sure the whirlwind day of travel is worth it for another big city on a short trip.

Not sure what the official rules are but I'm a US passport holder, and having arrived from quite a few places, have never heard a word about vaccinations, or heard of anyone else who has. Airport authorities are mostly concerned with your $25 each.

Happy planning.

Thank you both modesto111 and BBecket. Sounds like a good option then is to get help from the hotel concierge. That makes it simple. Maybe we'll be able to stay longer on another trip and have time for other explorations.
