Nile Cruise with Virgin Holidays

Has anybody been on any of the Virgin Holiday cruises on the Nile? I am interested in any information e.g. what the boats are like, the rooms, food, how good are the trips and also the cost of the trip to Abu Simbel by plane. Any info will be gratefully received as I have never been on a Nile cruise or to Egypt for that matter.

Can't answer your question without knowing the name of the boat you will be on.

We are going by road to Abu Simbel, leaves early in the morning, but the sunrise over the desert is stunning.

There are different standards of boats, suggest you look at some of the reviews, sorry I don't know the link, sure some other helpful bod will put it up for you.

Tripwise, most of the places you visit will be crowded, all the trips seem to disgorge their complement at the same time, can be quite stressful, Abu Simbel is one of the exceptions, no tour guides allowed so you can take it at your own pace, I should say, no tour guides allowed inside,

Same with the Bazzarris, they will hassle you to kingdom come, try your best and live with it, it's their way, but it can be very wearing.

Food is generally good, we try to eat in Egyptian restaurants when we visit, fairly reasonable prices, it depends on the establishment if they sell alcohol or not

On our last cruise, food was buffet style, fairly reasonable and plenty of it.

Cabins, they are exactly that, You shouldn't be spending too much time in it anyway, so there is enough room to sleep, depending on the soundproofing and location determines the noise level you will have to contend with, no sure what would be the best location, we were on the upper deck, the noise from people walking above was a little annoying, but like everything, you get used to it.

Be prepared for an unforgetable experience.

There is quite a long thread on MS Darakum which is Virgin Holidays cruise boat. It is posted on the Cruises Forum. If you want to read it, on the 'Search' facility above, instead of Luxor Forum choose All Forums then search under MS Darakum Nile cruiser. Apparently it was new in May this year and the vast majority of reports are good and contain quite a lot of information.

My advice - Don't book with Virgin Holidays Cruises!

Very pushy salespeople who don't give you all the information, cruises overpriced compared to other cruise holiday operators, very poor after-sales and customer service when you complain. Expect to run up a massive phone bill when trying to get any issues resolved. They also take a larger deposit than other companies (more than twice the deposit required compared to other companies). If you wish to cancel or you find the exact same cruise holiday cheaper elsewhere, then you are stuck with them as you will lose your entire deposit plus they will not price match or refund the difference.

If you decide to go ahead anyway, then ensure that you read all the small print on their website and don't let them pressurize you into booking straightaway, as we found to our cost - have paid GBP320 more with Virgin then we would have if we had booked with www.cruise.co.uk for a Med Cruise in September 2009. Found out that even booking direct with the cruise line would have been much cheaper than Virgin!

I sincerely recommend you shop around and try www.bookmeacruise.com or www.cruise.co.uk or even trailfinders or kuoni. Longwoodholidays specialises in Egypt, Jordan etc and do very good Nile cruises too.

Thanks, I've already changed my mind about Virgin, great for holidays but I've come to realize it's better to go with a proper cruise company, just need to decide which one.
