First nile cruise

We are thinking of going on a Nile Cruise in March 09. Does anyone know of any good places we can try for a good deal from the UK. We are looking at flying from either Leeds or Manchester and would like a 7 day tour all inc or half board would suit

thanks so much look forward to your replies

Hi Michelle

If you want to book Nile Cruises and flight tickets, you can use one of the big companies like Thomas Cook or Travco www.travcogroup.com

If you want just to book some cruises, then you can check some information on some websites like luxortraveltips or welcome2aswan or thefreelancers, you will find good information on these sites

All the cruises offer full board stay and including all visits

Best Regards,

Both Thompson (now part of First Choice) and Portland offer the Nile Discovery cruise which is usually on the Crown Prince. Portland is usually cheaper for the same holiday. It is now AI but you only pay for your drinks. Dont think you will find a HB cruise by the way.

Hi Michelle. If you shop at Tesco you can use your clubcard vouchers with Cosmos (same company as Archers Direct)They are worth 4x face value so if you have £100 worth you will get £400 off! Mind you it took me a year to save £100 worth! Also I often get info from African Safari Club with last minute deals for Nile cruises. However I think they are all Gatwick departures. Might be worth looking on their website to see if they do Manchester.

Hi Rayche. Pleased to hear the Magic was ok as we're going soon. Can you tell me how much the trip to Abu Simbel was with Cosmos and if they offered it by land or Air? Also what day was the Abu Simbel trip?Did you do any "extra" trips and were they worth it? Also did you tip at the beginning of the week like it says in the brochure, and how much? Were there any tummy problems on board? Many thanks.

Just got back from Magic 1 on Monday.

It was all inclusive & what a holiday, Can't wait for another - just superb, exceeded all expectations. Think of Agatha Christie & Poirot to get the impression of the decor.

The boat is very very clean & no-one had tummy upsets.

You can tour the kitchens onboard and have a look for yourself. Food is good & it is safe to eat salads onboard the boat.

Make sure you always use the handcleaner before eating anything, Egyptian money is filthy and is a big cause of the upsets.

Expect to tip about £60 per couple by the end of the cruise - this will cover everything onboard and during the trips - They say it is a guideline but they do remind you several times (a bit annoying). You get 3 envelopes - 1 for the outside trip tips, 1 for the Boat staff, 1 for your Egyptologist.

It seems a lot of money but it is worth it for a smooth holiday - you are very well looked after.

AT THE AIRPORT - get your visa for yourself from the booths just inside the entrance door on the left hand side (approx £10 English)cheapest way of doing it. Ask for small denomination change in Egyptian pounds here if you can. The rate is better than in the UK.

IMPORTANT - Handle all of your own baggage at the airport - all of the time right upto and including putting it into the coach locker. The men stood at the side of the coach are nothing to do with it and they will ask you for £4 english just for picking the bag up, if they try to do this say 'La Shokran' refuse to pay and get on the coach.

Once on the coach your baggage will be carried for you onto the boat and the other tips cover this.

Camel ride(£15 english) & Balloon flight(£70 english) are both very good trips.

Abu Simbel trip was a 2.30am start and they fly you there from Aswan. We didn't go but some friends did and they said it was excellent but expensive.

Try a couple of simple Arabic words at dinnertime on the staff they love it & they respond with a few more to learn each day.

Be careful when handing money over to Taxis/traders the small pesetas look almost like the bigger pound notes, always double check and read the pound word because they do try to give you change for the smaller amount - make eye contact so they know you are clear.

We paid well in advance of the holiday and had to pay full price which we thought was still good value but if you can wait until 2 - 4 weeks prior to the cruise and have a few good boats in mind you will save £200 per person. Just be flexible with the particular boat.

Magic 1, magic 2, Lady Mary are all good boats - do a bit of research if you do it this way.

Remember if anyone in the streets or temples etc 'kindly' offers anything, help, photo, directions, simple info - they will be asking for money. Just say 'LA' and they will ask someone else.

At the Botanical gardens men & kids will approach you with lemon/mango tree leaves and 'try' to show you a tree down a path etc just refuse from the outset or they will expect money from you.

Use the loos in the boat or hotels where you can, anywhere else is 'a bit scruffy' & you will get 1 piece of paper and have to pay something for an 'experience' If you need to it's best to both go at the same time and pay the same single tip.

Carry hand cleaner with you at all times and use it before putting your fingers in your mouth or eating anything!

Aswan & Luxor both have good tourist markets, Aswan will hassle you so expect it - this will be your 'training ground' after this you will be a veteran nothing will ever phase you out again!

Find the one about 3 streets back from the boats at Luxor and they will allow you to browse a bit more without quite the same hassle, Glittery Pashmina (25LE) & hats(8LE) etc are cheap here. Just Haggle start very low we bought 4 Pashmina scarfs for 95LE instead of the 400LE asking price. Some friends got them for 80LE!

Enjoy your holiday & be careful when out & about. You will have such a good time.
