Price comparison – Tour Operator -v- Independent Agent

I am just back from Luxor and thought it would be interesting to do a price comparison between the travel firm I went with (Libra) and a price list I picked up from Karnak Travel at the OWP. I didn’t go on any of these trips so can’t comment on the quality etc. and I have no connection with either of them.

Libra – Karnak Sound & Light show - £24 pp

Karnak Travel – Karnak Sound & Light show – 150LE (£18 approx) pp

Libra – West Bank Tours – Classic £44; Comprehensive £59 pp

Karnak Travel – West Bank Tour – 275LE (£33 approx) pp (which I think is the same as Libra’s ‘Classic’

Libra – East Bank Tour - £36 pp

Karnak Travel – East Bank Tour – 180LE (£21.50 approx) pp

Libra – trip to Cairo by air - £199 pp

Karnak Travel – trip to Cairo by air – 1250LE (£149 approx) pp

Libra – Abu Simbel day flight – price on request

Libra – Aswan by day (road & train) - £75 pp

Karnak Travel – Aswan & Abu Simbel (full day) – 1500LE (£179 approx) pp

Libra – hot air balloon (albeit they weren’t operating) - £135 per couple promotion

Karnak Travel – hot air balloon – 275LE (£33 approx) pp

Libra – camel/desert safari - £15 pp (short); £20 pp (desert)

Karnak Travel – safari oasis (desert trip) full day – 600LE (£71.50 approx) pp

(there must be a big difference in what this is, but I don’t know what that will be)

Libra – Fellah’s tent - £39 pp

Karnak Travel – Fellah’s tent – 300LE (£36 approx) pp

Prices of other tours:

Libra

Sunset felucca - £15 pp

Denderah day cruise - £55 pp

Aswan mini cruise - £115 pp

Desert & star gazing - £25 pp

Souk shopping - £8 pp

West Bank alternative tour (Medinet Habu) - £55 pp

Abydos day tour - £51 pp

Karnak Travel

Quad bike – 300LE (£36 approx) pp

Felucca or horse or camel ride – 40 (£5 approx) pp

The Red Sea (Hurghada or Safaga) day trip – 250LE (£30 approx) pp

Aswan (High Dam/Obelisk/Philae Temple) day trip – 500LE (£60 approx) pp

Denderah & Abydos Temples day trip – 350LE (£42 approx) pp

Nile cruise to Denderah Temple) (full day) – 350 (£42 approx) pp

Trip to Cairo by overnight train – 750LE (£89 approx) pp

Both appear to do 50% discount for children under 12 (except for air travel)

Obviously these prices I have calculated will change depending on the rate of exchange at the time (I calculated them on what we were getting when in Luxor last week, and I think the rate has risen a little since then – and hopefully I have done my maths correctly – I am not good with figures!!) However, at least it gives you an idea of what to expect if you are travelling to Luxor soon.

Also, bear in mind that lots of these you can do yourself without a guide if you so wish.

hi

many thx for price list. just goes to show how much some comapanies cash in.

if i hadnt used TA before our holiday last year, we would of been sucked in by our holiday company, i wont mention the name. we used karnak last yr and were more than happy, having paid a fraction of what other trippers had paid with uk agents.

i appreciate that its everyones choice as to whom they use, but invariably we all go on the same excursion/trip and prices vary considerably.

once again, marlscat, thanks for info

You should get half price not just for under 12's but anyone in possession of a student card AND under 6 should be FREE.

Hi FlatsinLuxor

That's handy to know - but it doesn't tell you that in any of the stuff I brought home with me.

The official rules for tickets is over 12's should have a student card so tour companies should offer half price to anyone in possession of a student card but they can't be bothered.

If you are going with an independent on a private tour they may insist on at least 2 adults to cover costs or an 1 adult and 2 students.

Marlscat, interesting list of price comparisons. I was surprised by the Fellah's tent price, not that I've been to it yet, as I thought it was much cheaper than that - more in the £10 - £15 pound range. Guess I won't be going to it anytime soon at those prices although I do believe it's a good evenings entertainment.

I was also amused by Libra's Souk shopping - £8 pp. Do they really charge to take guests to the Souk! Paying £8pp would soon push up the cost of those bartered for items. But Oh boy, do I want that job! I'd even do it for less I enjoy the souk game so much. :)

I'll set myself up in business and do souk shopping for 50LE per person!!! Nice little earner there and I get to indulge in some shopping with other peoples money!

Any takers??

Yes, I found the souk tour quite surprising as well. I didn't do any tours with either Libra or any other tour operator - it's just that I was given a leaflet as I passed by Karnak Travel one day and so sat and compared the prices and thought it would be good to post them so that people could get an idea of current prices.
