Dendera and Abydos

I don't think I've visited these two places...

Just now, I've been reading some threads about how to get there. The quickest being a car, but the most romantic and relaxing (I think) a boat.

Do I understand you can't go to Abydos by boat? So, if we jump ship, as Luxorflats suggested in another thread, we could go there by car and then back to Luxor.

How long would a boat, maybe a felluca, take to Dendera? Will there be taxis at Dendera, or should I arrange for someone to pick us up from there? and how long would the drive (nog counting Abydos) take to get back to Luxor?

On my recent trip iin April the security around thea area was a little intense for a boat trip....best bet is get a good taxi and spend £30 or £40 on the trip....budgeting time may be tricky if you are on an organised tour.....From Luxor you need a very generous half day and maybe a good deal more if you really want to view the sites

It will be a full day trip by road and a must see. Many tour companies in Luxor will take you in either a private car or a van. I would forget about the taxi. If you need further details and help please PM me.

hmmm, I realise it would be a full days´ trip, but the only real reason I was considering it, is that a boat trip on the Nile would be so nice. We only have 4 full days in Luxor, I plan to use bikes to do all the sites, but knowing my niece, I need to pace our schedule.

A full day in the car does not sound appealing to me. We also have spend about 5 hours getting to Soma the 5th day.....

so maybe it´s just Dendera for us, but I think we can arrange, and therefore decide, this on the spot?

Romantic and realaxing boat trip is certainly the image.

Whilst we were there in May, we talked to an American couple who had done the boat trip.

Reality was that it was a v-e-r-y long day, very hot, with a boat where children were allowed to run amok, at will, by parents who were sun-bathing/sleeping.

They felt it would have been better to have done it by car and visit both sites, which is what we did in 2006 when convoys were the rule - Our convoy, once the Red Sea mob turned off, was a police pick-up each end, with 4 cars in-between. We certainly didn't spend half a day in a car, but, having a police escort meant that all junctions had the traffic halted, off to the side, awaiting our speedy passage - we didn't stop!!

The journey might, therefore, be a bit slower now, but I think the ability to 'do' both sites would swing it for me.

oh, that´s a very sobering picture of the boat trip :D

hmmmm. I hate kids running around, esp if they´re not mine...

I will try to chart the sites that we (I :P) want to see and decide if we have time to visit these two as well. I´ve been looking at pictures, and they do look nice....We´ll see...but thanks for all the input!

The boat trip from the Iberotel ,is in my opinion a very good deal, but it is a long tiring day,but great to say you have sailed the Nile, and the buffet lunch is excellent.!

we have done this trip 3 times.!

we also have been to Abydos 3 visits,to me Abydos is unlike any other site, and the atmosphere is wonderful.

simple answer really is.

If you want to do both temples, then private taxi or a group in a mini bus.

If you just want to do Dendera, then the boat from the Iberotel is a great day out. We never had any trouble with kids running around on the boat, it was a very relaxing day with some really good food into the bargain. Booked via Karnak travel, outside the WP.

Abydos, this was done with a taxi, took about 2 and 3 hours, couple of hours in the temple, could have done with more time there, (we were rushed) so give yourself 3 hours then 3 hours back again, there is a nice inexpensive cafe at Abydos, suggest an early start.

suggested itinery

depart taxi Luxor 7am,

Arrive Abydos 10am

lunch 1300,

depart Abydos 1330

Arrive Dendera 1430

depart 1700

arrive Luxor 1900

all times are relative for obvious reasons, we had to take a major detour as someone drove into the irrigation canal, major blockage.

I would go with JimandTarja's schedule, leaving even earlier if you can.

We had to leave at 8 for the main convoy and we elected to catch the earlier one back to Luxor, so we had a bit less time 'on site'

No doubt blasting thro' every road junction at what felt like 60 made up for some time

It's been said - 2 sites - car, 1 site - boat, but you already know what I would pick.
