luxor excursions

There are four of us spending a week in Luxor in September. Is it best to book excursions in advance or should we wait till we get there? We are staying at the Sheraton resort and im thinking we should be able to book at the hotel, when we arrive. Any advice would be much appreciated.

Don't book in advance, don't book through the hotel. There are, quite literally, hundreds of licensed travel agents in Luxor where you can get a good deal and book with safety and confidence.

Best wishes,

Edward.

Totally 2nd everything Edward says, you will save yourself a small fortune if you book your excursions when you get there, it is not difficult to do, as there are many local tour companies within a couple of hundred yards of the Sheraton.

Also, if you do it when you are there, you can book things depending on how you feel, what else you're doing, etc. and will not have to be tied to certain days and times, which you would, if you do it in advance.

You can book excursions from local agents as Edward says. There are several of them along the colonnade under the Winter Palace. You can usually book one evening for the next day. Go along there, ask the prices and haggle.

Also, please don't think you have to go everywhere with a tour. Sometimes it's handy to have a car pick you up and you may want a guide. But if you prefer, for all the mainstream visits you can take a taxi and pay at the gate in the normal way. You might like to do that once you have got a feel for things.

Just to tag on the end. You might want to buy a good Luxor Egyptology guide, The Kent Weeks book seems to be the most popular choice and I completely agree. Read through the book and then you can decide for yourself if you still want a guided tour or maybe you will prefer to just hire a taxi and create your own viewing schedule. This is also a good way to avoid the dreaded stops at the papyrus and alabaster factories and so allows extra time at the sights before the heat gets too much for you and the bonus of saving loads of money while knowing that you are helping the local economy by employing direct without the big tour companies getting their cut. Also as others have said, don't book all the excursions at once as you will find that your plans can change quite dramatically if you come done with a tummy upset etc. Being honest some days I can't be bothered to move from the pool before dark as it is so hot! So be prepared expecially if you are not used to a lot of excersise and nothing prepares you for the heat if you are not used to it.

Hello

The Sheraton in quite a long way from the Corniche, (main area in Luxor), although within walking distance other than during mid morning to late afternoon when it will be too hot. I would suggest that you go into this area in Luxor, where there are some very reputable agents, mostly situated around the Winter Palace Hotel, who will have boards displayed showing the various excursions. You may decide for the sake of convenience to book via the hotel but you will pay far more in doing so. Do not be put off by the scruffy run up to the hotel, or in fact the place itself, I believe that a lot of renovation has gone on and that it is a quite a different place, once you get inside.

I agree with all the posters above re booking after arrival. It's what we have done ever since our 1st visit (a cruise, Luxor & Cairo)

Another supporting reason for DIY is that if you are visiting the VoK (Not sure about the rest), the guide does NOT enter the tomb, so all you needed really was a taxi.
