Valuable van Gogh Painting stolen from gallery in Cairo

This news flash/item has just come up on radio, BBC 4 @ 9.15pm - so all travellers going out of and, coming into Cairo and Luxor may be subject to long waits and searching.

For the art lovers amongst us - it is known as the Poppy Flowers.

Best wishes.

I read about it a couple of hours or so ago.

This is what it says on Yahoo:

'A painting by Dutch post-Impressionist master Vincent Van Gogh was stolen from a museum in Egypt's capital on Saturday, the Culture Ministry said. Skip related content

The poppy flower painting was taken from Cairo's Mr & Mrs Mahmoud Khalil Museum, which is situated in a large villa on the banks of the Nile, a ministry statement said.

The museum is home to one of the Middle East's finest collections of 19th and 20th century art put together by the politician Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil, who died in 1953.

Among works at the museum are pieces by Gauguin, Monet, Manet and Renoir.

Culture Minister Farouk Hosni contacted the security forces "to undertake the necessary measures at all air, sea and land exits" to ensure the painting was not taken outside the country.

It was not immediately clear how the painting was stolen.

They have found it - that was quick! Stopped two Italians? trying to smuggle it out of the airport.

Oh no they haven't ...

"A Van Gogh painting worth $50 million stolen from a Cairo museum is still missing, Egypt's culture minister says.

Earlier Farouk Hosni had said two Italians had been arrested at Cairo airport, and the small canvas found.

But later he said he had been given "inaccurate" information, and the painting was still missing."

The same article says that the young Italian couple aroused suspicion because

"they were seen visiting a toilet and then rapidly leaving the premises."

None of us have ever needed to do that in Egypt, have we?

Think its the 2 nd time it been nicked in the same way, it get's cut from the frame, so it's smaller now, so if it keeps getting nicked there'll be nothing left , so why don't they pin it to the wall and glass front it

Hey Rayvenini

Your are right, last time was late 70's and I was one of the unlucky visitors who got caught up in that a short while after - like spending about 2 hours in a sweaty crocodile line going through passport control/customs due to security staff being deployed elswhere for search and rescue.

Why this little (and getting smaller) gem was not better safeguarded, I can't imagine, there aren't really that many since v G topped himself at an early age.

Best wishes

"Between November of 1881 and July of 1890, Vincent van Gogh painted almost 900 paintings" - http://www.vangoghgallery.com/painting/

Quite prolific in fact !

Hey jjumpstart

Wow, no wonder that they are so priceless, what I wonder would he have achieved with three score years and ten? And on that basis, we might all have been able to afford one! I had no idea there where that many with true provenance.

Thanks for that, always happy to have knowledge passed on or be corrected, lets hope that the other 899, where ever they may be are safely guarded and not under the wing of the Cairo Museum where it would appear from news broadcasters, that security if practically non existant these days

Best wishes
