Luxor Trip

I have just returnede from a 2 wekk stay at the St Joseph Hotel, the first week with my daughter the second on my own.

We flew by Easy Jet, I thought the service they provided was excellent and plane was more comfy the its competetitors on the same route.no films or entertainment but how many times can you watch Mr Bean and old Top Gear repeats ?

Hi Matthewvh,

Hope you and your daughter had a good time in Luxor?

Thanks for your comments on Easyjet, I've only ever flew down to Luton or Barcelona with them but am flying to Luxor with them later this year, good to know service and comfort is good on the longer journeys.

Even with the additional costs of flying from Scotland to Gatwick I've saved a fortune using them compared to the tour operators like Thomson.

Suzie :-)

Easyjet is better than some. It doesn't sound as if you had a lot of trouble at the St Joseph as another recent poster said she had.

Technical hiccup on the last incomplete post, the first week went well all the trips to the West Bank, a deserted Luxor Temple no one there apart from us, we had great walks in the morning along Medina St and purchased fruit and Sugar Cane juice off the smiling traders and had gentle banter,we went into town that way as the touting along the upper and lower Corniche was unpleasant. The mood seemed to change after a week, we had a attempted pick pocketing in St Joseph st, the old scarf trick again, afterf a tongue lashing he apoligiesed, this happened to another couple at the hotel as well, we witnessed a fairly big fight between 2 caleche drivers and another a few nights later , gangs of 20 or so youngsters were tearing up and down the street until the early hours. One couldnt really leave the hotel without constant hassle from caleche, taxi or rent boys, on the night of the Haye, Klitscho handbags at dawn I strolled bacK from the quaint Kings Head to be propositioned 3 times in 100 metres whilst dodging the puddles of horse urine and horse muck I have been to Luxor 3 times before and havent witnessed this much antagonism from the locals. A splendid senior citizen used to pop over from the Nile Palace for a drink a the St Jo,s and was mugged once and pickpocketed 2 time in 3 days the Tourist Police who this year appear to be as effective as wax fireguards didnt do much, maybe they are are powerless, we used to escort the senior citizen back to his hotel so he didnt get robbed again. One lunchtime we witnessed from the roof of the St Jo a mob of about 25 people fighting near the Courthouse, yet again the Police seemed powerless to do anything, some of the guests who had stayed many times before said they wouldnt go back and resigned themselves to the rooftop pool, we also had 2 young couples staying there and they wouldnt go out as the constant hassle was too much for them. Im a great fan of Eygypt and Luxor in particular but at the moment in my opinion it is not a very pleasant place to be. If you do visit it is worth getting a reliable driver to to ferry you about and visit the wwonderful sites but be very vigilant, I shall visit again but not in the near future.

Thanks for the update, like some the other reports that are coming through it make pretty sad reading.

Whilst these events might not put me off, I can certainly see the more causal visitor going elsewhere if words spreads about such events (as it must)

This won't help things at all.

Many Luxor visitors are there only because it is something you must do if you are at Sharm or somewhere similar for sun/sea & sand. They are a very fickle customer and will just go wherever it is cheaper/sunnier/safer.

Like many members writing on here I have, many times, enjoyed just walking around the back streets at night and previously advised other members to do so.

I can't do that any more.

I'd also like to thank you for the update. It's a shame that your trip was spoiled by the behaviour you described, which is very sad indeed. It's certainly a bit worrying seeing these reports coming through - there seems to be more of them being posted almost on a daily basis.

Missed adding this to my previous post.

Topics like this seem too easily to get removed. If your post goes in this direction the link here tripadvisor.com/help/why_was_my_forum_post_r… is a useful place to start at, to question TA as to why.

I consider it a serious subject which should be discussed but some here think otherwise apparently

MATTHEWVH,

Thanks for sharing about your recent visit to Luxor. Your second week makes very sad reading to those who have always found Luxor such a pleasant place to be. Glad to read that at least your first week was fairly undisturbed.

Me and my wife took a nile cruise in april for our first time in egypt and loved the week. the hassle from the traders was a shock at first but something we got used to. we was all for going again next year but we must admit to feeling a little put of by recent post by fellow travelers. I must admit i found the hassle at Edfu the worst and if and when we return i wont be using a caleshe as the way the poor horse was treated was heartbreaking.

Si
