taxi-bad experience

As many of you will know I use the same driver for the majority of time I visit Luxor-on late nights out I use others,I had enormous bother with one driver who has his taxi "decorated-with neon lights, flouresent lights and TV screen"-I can give his name and number privately if anyone would like to avoid it.

Myself and daughter were going back to hotel and unfortunately this taxi picked us up.

We found that mirrors in front were directed down top, lights picked out underwear and the driver was playing soft pornographic music DVDs on the screen. He knows us from all our visits to Sofitel Karnak during drive back to hotel he asked why we always use same taxi and never others-I explained I feel safe with my usual one and he is honest and reliable.we were soon stopped at doors of hotel ,he continued to question me,I was told that there were many men outside hotel who hated me and I would not always have my usual driver to protect me.he was angry and leered towards us I asked if he was threatening me,I opened the door in order to allow night security to hear as I was becoming uncomfortable with his behaviour,he continued threateningly so we left the car and told him to go away,he came out car and shouted at us,we said go away again, the security had to step in(5 of them)he shouted and swore at us continually until security got him away and we were inside hotel.this episode ended up with reports and visit to police station-which in itself is another story.

In 13 visits I have never experienced this "bad side" but unfortunately I believe it is becoming more common.

Unfortunately, you are right, it is becoming more common, people need to understand that Luxor is fast becoming a place to be avoided. I do not buy into other comments of 'It's how you deal with it', bottom line is you shouldn't have to.

Think of it this way a tourist getting in a taxi in Luxor is paying a lot more than an Egyptian, so you would think that that taxi driver would be delighted to have tourist in his cab so he can rip off (yes it may be way cheaper than back home, but bottom line is your getting ripped off), but NO they really want to rip you off, and get angry and aggressive.

Luxor should be seriously avoided, until there is some law and order restored.

I will still be returning to Luxor as I love it -----but I think newbies should find and use a taxi that is recommended by others either organised before they go or from people they meet in hotel who have had good experiences,

if you find one you get on with and can stick with them, develop a trusting relationship then thats great but there are too many rogue elements out there and it always amazes me how someone can slag you off after you have used their service and therefore contributed to their livelihood!!

It is probably against the rules...but Honest John lists garages that have been recommended by users...this way GOOD experiences are passed to the inexperienced.

It would not take a LOT of brainpower to arrange this on the Forum...maybe contacts could ONLY be posted/cleared by one of the eight Destination experts...who could vet recommendations from regulars to avoid chancers?

If the news was spread in the taxi mafia in Luxor that good behaviour is posted on TA it might improve things a bit?

Just a thought...

Matt.

brilliant idea-letting taxi drivers know that they can be named and shamed publicly or recommended after unbiased vetting would be beneficial I think

Matt,

I realise your 'vetted drivers' list idea was posted with the best of intentions and on the face of it and in an 'ideal' world it would be very beneficial to all those requiring such information when visiting Luxor.

Unfortunately however, we do not live in an ideal world and I fear that those with 'vested interests' would seek to destroy such a facility, should THEIR name not be in a prominant position on such a list.

This situation already happens NOW whenever a trustworthy driver, boatman, trip company, etc is recomended by a DE.

I am never troubled by 'rip-offs' or abusive drivers etc.simply because I already have a list which contains a trustworthy driver on the eastbank, a driver on the westbank, a motorboat captain, a caleche driver, a tour operator, etc, but when I recomend any of these to prospective travellers, for the benefit of those travellers and for no benefit or reward for myself (other than being happy that they have not been ripped off and that I may have helped them out a little) I am regularly accused of 'taking back-handers' etc to promote a particular driver, which is NOT, or never has been the case.

So unfortunately, the 'human' element (jealousy, greed, spite) would prevent a good idea such as this from working as it was intended, which is a great shame.

Mmmmm, what happens if one DE has a bad experience with a taxi driver previously recommended by another DE ?.

If people have regular drivers that they recommend then fine but just because I recommend one it doesn't mean that he will be to everyones taste. The same applies to hotels, cars, books, cruise boats, food...etc etc.

I think we have to be very careful trying to name and shame individuals. If someone has a bad day and is rude and surly to an individual does that mean we should blacken their name for ever on here ?.

Of course I am more likely to go with someone that a DE recommends but thats beacuse they are a DE. It does not make them infallible and we could get into a blame thing on here where if someone recommends a person and we don't feel we get the service WE expect, we turn on the person who recommended them in the first place.

Just my opinion.

Sorry..........but, if a taxi turned up decorated with neon lights etc would you get in it?

I would not.

The OP made a bad judgment in this case and decided to let the world know.

It's not like she would have to wait too long for another one to turn up is it?
