6. Re: Airport luggage scam

There are a long list of 'scams' and cons used towards tourists in Egypt, with those in 'officialdom' being some of the worst offenders. Many of these scams are listed in the Top Questions section at the top right of the forum page, which all prospective visitors should read BEFORE they travel, so that they are ready for them.

Another scam operated at the check-in desk is for the 'official' to have his foot on the baggage scales, so that your baggage reads as 'overweight' when you are checking in and you are charged for excess weight.

To guard against this it is advisable to carry your own baggage scales and to physically weigh your bags whilst in the check-in queue, in full view of the check-in staff.

Don't think that just because someone wears a uniform, or is an official of some kind that he is not going to attempt to con you in some way. As said previously, they are often the worst for rip-offs !

“,,,thought it was £15. That's what I was charged but I've just looked in my passport & it said $15!””

It is $15, I am guessing that you let a tour guide/rep get it for you. I had the “put your hand luggage on the scale” business a couple of weeks ago but, when I gave the guy a sceptical look, he just laughed and said they had to tag it. That’s all they did and there were no 'subtle' hints for a backhander.

We also came back from Luxor via Easyjet's flight on Monday and am happy to say that no-one tried to scam us at all - however, we are very aware that this can happen and always have some small notes ready at the airport 'weigh-in' just in case!!

As to hand baggage, I purposely bought very lightweight cabin baggage which is way smaller than all the airlines recommend and, since doing so, no airline (except for Ryanair) has asked to either measure or weigh it.

I travelled back from Hurghada recently, and no one tried scamming me there, nice clean airport, and everything dealt with very quickly.

Of course I realise that this is a different part of Egypt, just so as not to confuse everyone lol.
