Bamburi area or Diani beach

I am new to this forum and thinking of holidaying in Kenya in July 2010.Which area would you favour? We want to stay somewhere that is safe to go out during the day that has shops or restaurants near by although it doesn't have to be a busy place.

Diani/ Galu beach is beautiful - soft white talcum powder sand, crystal clear Indian ocean as warm as bathwater, palm trees, - bounty advert but the downside is its 1.5 - 2 hours transfer time via the Likoni ferry. On the other hand, north coast Bamburi beach is around 30 - 40 minutes transfer so you can be in the pool or bar while the south coast lot are still waiting for the ferry!

Bamburi is also handy for loads of local attractions, shops, bars and restaurants. Downside here is the beach isn't quite as good and there are more beachboys on that stretch of beach - they usually outnumber the tourists!

Bamburi Beach is one of most developed parts of the coast. It's quite brash and busy, with the main coast highway passing close by. Diani Beach on coast south of Mombasa is a bit more cut off (no bridge to Mombasa city or the rest of the coast, only a ferry). The resort area here is somewhat less developed and the main highway passes by 3km inland, which tends to make it just a bit quieter. Everywhere on the coast is safe by day, and invariably safe by night as well (can't remember the last time I heard of anyone having any trouble). There's a relatively limited range of shops and restaurants in both areas.

Hope this helps as a start.

As everyone knows I am a lover of the North Coast but I can't figure out why people limit their choices to say Bamburi or Diani, if you are willing to spend up to 2hrs+ traveling on the ferry to reach the south coast why not travel the same up the north coast and you will be in Kilifi or Watamu and hey the beaches there are every bit as nice as Diani and the people are so friendly, just give it a thought, The Mnarani Hotel in Kilifi is very nice and the excellent TBBC another 40 minutes up the road is well worth a visit.

The time it takes to get to Diani Beach from Mombasa varies during the day. If you avoid the morning and late afternoon rush hours there is usually not much of a wait.
