paying for safari

Can anyone offer any suggestions? We have finally chosen a safari company for our trip in September (volcano permitting). He has asked us to send a deposit. We would prefer not to make a Swift payment as this incurs an extra charge. However we don't seem to be able to make any sort of payment as his account number has 12 digits which is 4 too long. We have emailed him and he has re-sent his details which he is certain are correct. Are bank account numbers a different format in Kenya? Spoken to two banks here who offer different advice. Anyone with first hand experience able to suggest anything?

Bank wires do incur a fee (between USD$20-USD$50 for International), but what doesn't? This is the means by which most all in-country outfitters accept payment. So you pay it.

As to the account number, if the outfitter's is 12/digits, it's 12. I have a few bank accounts, different banks and each have different number of digits. And for the wires I remit to Kenya or Tanzania, no two banks have the same number of digits in their account numbers.

Use the info the outfitter provided (along with Swift Code) and unless for some reason it can't be processed, go back to outfitter for additional info.

I agree with Sandi.

You have no choice but to pay into a bank account unless credit card facilities are available, but then you may get slugged a 3-5 % fee on top anyway.

We were charged $30AUD our end and a further $25USD at the Kenya end but we wer still saving money by booking direct with the Hotel.

Good luck

There is quite alot of detail about paying deposits in the link below - don't know if this helps? I paid ours through Barclays so if there's anything specific you need to know please ask and I will try to give you answer!
