Things to do around Diani Beach area

Is it advisable to use the locals form of transport to get around and if so how would we go about it? What time does it start getting dark in late July/early August? Are there any places we absolutely should visit in this area ?What would be the best way to visit Mombasa town?We are doing a 3 day safari but we are staying for 2 weeks and hubby will go bananas if we just sit around the pool all day, many thanks.

well, you can use the matatus during the day for shorter ways. Usually you have two directions on the Diani Beach - the splitting point will be the Barclays Bank. This means, that you have the part from Indian Ocean (the hotel which is the nearest to Mombasa at the Diani Beach to the Barclay Bank and the part from Barclays Bank to Galu Beach and vice versa.

It ia also possible to get a matatu for the whole day, but you will pay a little bit more in this case.

Usually it is getting dark between 18.30 - 19.00 in the evening. Than it is better to take no matatu. You can take one of the taxis (they are offered on hotel compounds, but there is also a taxi point opposite the Barclays Bank). They have moderate prices. There is also a Nakumatt supermarket since some weeks.

For going to Mombasa - the best would be to hire a taxi or ask one of the tour operators. The price depends on how many you are and also which places you want to visit in Mombasa (Akamba Wodden factory, Haller Park, Fort Jesus and some more).

Things or places to go in Diani - there are some nice places for having a snack, a meal or only a drink:

for drinks:

- Kings Club

- Pintz

for both:

- Wahnsinn (great value for your money and also a good choice for drinks and food) - in the Bazaar Shopping Place - beside Carneval and Bull`s Steakhous - one of my favourite places - also with the possibility to watch sports if you are interested in this

- Ushago (in the Baharini Shopping Center) - nice bar with 5 different styles of cuisine, usually you can go there to watch sports

- Aniellos (i love the usuall one) - great italian food and good prices

- Sands at Nomads Beach Restaurant

- Forty thieves Beach Bar

- African Pots ( i would try the one on the road Diani - Ukunda, there are 3, one at the diani Beach, the one i mentioned before and one in Ukunda)

- coastal dishes

- Leonardos - fantastic ice cream

- Galaxy (chinese food)

you will find some more nice places, also with indian food. It is really worth to go out and have some fun.

If you need more infos, please feel free to ask.

As well as all the bars and restos that Chrissy mentions, you might want to think about some actual activities. I'd recommend a trip to Kaya Kinondo, the little sacred forest a short way south of Pinewood, that opened up to visitors a couple of years back. There's a visitor centre and small exhibition, and Digo guides to escort you into the forest. You'll see what Diani's tropical forest looked like before the hotels went up.

Visit Colobus Cottage, too - the primate research and welfare centre responsible for the "Colo-bridges" across the road.

Have a great trip,

thanks Richard, i forgot all the other interesting things.

Well, you can also do some bicycle trips where you can explore the area.

There is also offered an excursion to some places where they put the slaves before they have been transported to Mombasa. I have not been there, but a friend of mine who found it very interesting.

Also different kinds of snorkelling trips (by glass bottom boat or with a dhow to the Kisite Marine Park in the south) are offerd.

I am sure, you won`t get bored.
