Accommodation

Hi everyone,

We are going to Mombasa in December. This is my first contribution but I have been watching the discussions for months now. Can anyone give me some advice on self catering accommodation that is in good condition with 2 bedrooms on the North Coast. Thank you

Take a look at Sunrise Apartments behind Nakumatt Nyali.

You might need to haggle as often their opening bid is usually high!

There's also the Indiana Apartments and cottages - prefer either the rondavels or cottages to the apartments. http://www.indianabeachkenya.com/

I cannot really understand why people prefer the North beach as Diani is much more friendly As for accomodation in the North I cannot help. One piece of advice is to remember at holiday times all prices in bars cafes and transport can and normally do rise by at least 50% Find the things you wish to buy and walk away ,then get a member of staff to buy it for you as they will get a normal price ,obviously they get a commission from the seller (standard in Kenya) but you should also give them a little of what savings they make for you,Muzungu (foreigner)inthe area immediately increases prices 200% I live in a village near the Diani beach and in same housing as locals so I now am accepted and get normal rates,or maybe its because I have a Meru wife who when negoitiating takes no prisoners

:-) Look at www.50bob.org to see why I need to haggle.

I would not argue with the 'mzungu' effect, if we want to buy anything that is not from a store where prices are marked like Tuskys or Nakumatt I go to look then my partner goes alone to buy, but here on the North Coast the prices are the same the year round in bars, cafes and restaurants and the wazungu pay the same as locals

Consider Royal Reserve Safari & Beach Club http://goo.gl/BoMt. They are in Kikambala in the North Coast of Mombasa and seem to have reasonable prices

Can't stand the pallaver at the ferry so the north coast wins hands down for me every time. Unless its rush hour can be in Mombasa in 20 mins.

Fair point the ferry can be a pain and the "new" ferrys still have not lived up to thier promise
