safari--another question!

We have 4 days and nights between flights at Nairobi airport. Is it too far to drive to Aberdare, Lake Nakuru, Masai Mara, back to Nairobi, taking in Nairobi NP before or after the safari? or should we just concentrate on the Mara? Any input please, distances do not look much on a map, but I know that Kenya is huge.

Disregard what you see on map.

Drive from NBO/Aberdares is about 2-2.5/hrs

Aberdares/Nakuru is 3/hrs

Nakuru/Mara is 5+/hrs

Mara/NBO is 5+/hrs

... on not the best roads.

Thank you. From your timings it seems it would be possible to squeeze it all in, but I am not sure that we will have time enough to truly appreciate our surroundings. Thinking caps on...

Just a thought...if we should opt to spend the 4 days in the Mara, would you suggest making one lodge our base, or maybe 2 nights at different lodges? I would appreciate your opinion.

How about 2 nights in Mara & 2 nights in Naivasha/Elementeita (or Nakuru) ?

Head out to Naivasha which is 90 min drive from NBI. Spend a night in Naivasha & a night in Elementeita (or Nakuru). Elem. is approx 30 min drive from Naivasha.

Sunbird Lodge in Elem.is lovely lodge perched on hills giving spectacular views of lake & escarpment.

From Naivasha, go to the Mara. Take the Mai Mahiu highway and take turning to Narok town.

This way, you've covered a National Park & the Rift Valley.

Given you have only 4 days, your route selection is best judged by exactly what you wish to see and when you are going! If you want scenery and to actually ‘meet the people’ as well see the wildlife; the Mara may not be the best place. To be honest, of those road routes above, the Mara route is the worst, plus you will waste at least 11 hours getting there and back! That is rather a chunk out of such a short time.

Hi Shoddi - don't let anyone on this forum put you off from going to the "Mara", if that's what you really want do. Whether for entire 4 days or even 2.

Have a look at "Google Earth" snapshot of route from Naivasha to Mara.

From "Mai Mahiu" junction to "Narok" town > 100 Kms (approx)

Narok to Mara > 300 Kms (approx)

If you leave for the Mara from Naivasha at 7.00 am, you'll should be home & dry by lunch time.

Stef,

What exactly does that have to do with the OP saving time, which was my point. It doesn’t matter which route you go to and from the Mara by, if you are driving it will eat into your time dramatically!
