Is Travel to Kenya during the August 2012 election safe?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Kenya for safari during August of 2012. We have heard from several people that we should not travel to Kenya during this time because of the election and the possible violence. Any thoughts on this? Would the safari destinations such as the Masai Mara still be safe? Keep in mind that we would need to route through Nairobi. Thanks in advance for your help.

As you've been told, it is so unlikely that the election will be held in August 2012 that nobody is allowing for that possibility.

As soon as something definite is announced, you will see a post on this Forum!!

Stayed in both Nairobi and the south coast during the post election violence and experienced no problems at all. Obviously used common sense and went no where likely problems might occur. No one can say for sure but the situation is very different to last time . The constitution is in place and everyone I have talked to is far more positive this time. As already stated tourists were not targeted anywhere. Corruption is still rife but external monitoring of the elections will be stronger.

The saddest thing was the effect the violence had on tourism and the huge loss of associated jobs. It had only just built up again when the kidnappings happened, with once again another huge set of holiday cancellations. No one can advise you but please do your own risk assessment and hopefully you will be able to build your itinerary to avoid or minimise possible trouble areas. You will absolutely be guaranteed a fabulous welcome and most likely a safe and wonderful holiday if you make your plans carefully.

Best wishes

Still no absolutely definite date because the March 2013 date is being challenged...

I was in Kenya during the constitutional election and to be on the safe side simply got out of Nairobi for a few days. For the general election best not be in any large cities.
