About 3 hours to Nakuru from Nairobi, stay overnight, then across the Rift Valley to the Mara. You'll fall over white rhino in Nakuru and get so close, black rhino are more shy and elusive, as they are in the Mara.

Not sure if these are "the best" or I was just lucky, but I did see rhino at Nairobi National Park (right after entering, around 7am), the Masai Mara (midday in an open area) and Lake Nakuru (the white rhinos - 3 of them together).

Lake Nakuru provided good white rhino sightings for us and Meru was excellent for lengthy black rhino encounters.

Lake Nakuru (white), Ol Pejeta, Lewa... there's even a sanctuary at Meru (white & black at these). Also in the very north of the Mara North Conservancy, believe 3 here - mom, pop and baby - believe they were black.

All are north of Nairobi, distances vary.

Drive from NBO/Nakuru (estimates) - 2-2.5/hrs; to Ol Pejeta - 3/hrs; Lewa - 4/hrs; Meru - 4-5/hrs.

From Nakuru to Mara is 5/hrs on some nasty road the closer to Mara you get. But then it's a 5/hr drive from Nairobi to Mara.

By far the best and easiest for both species is Nairobi National Park. Amazing.

We saw 5 recently during a 3 hour game drive at Lake Nakuru. We haven't seen them anywhere else in Kenya.
