help needed with Kenya or Tanzania or both itineraries

Hi everyone and I need your help.

I am determined to go to Africa this year: end of December, beginning of January. Countries that I am considering are Kenya or Tanzania or both. Little bit about us: we are in our mid 20’s, we love to be active, and we love nature, authentic culture, food, bars, beaches so we would want to experience it all not just safaris that seems like most are talking about. Also budget is a very important part, I usually plan all my trips, itineraries and travel by ourselves. If I understand correctly, safaris are usually done with the guide, so you are in their hands for couple days or whatever you buy. But I imagine traveling to different destination could be done by us (buses, trains, cabs). We will have 10-11 days for this Africa experience. So I read quite a bit and still feel like I don’t know much at all, I would appreciate any info for possible itineraries or any other info. I guess it could start in Nairobi and I would just explore Kenya, or in Dar Es Salaam and just Tanzania or maybe I could start in one and finish my trip in the other? Also I would consider other countries as well if you think they would create a better experience for authentic Africa.

Thanks a lot in advance. Lets start this planning officially :)

If you do your homework you will find that it is cheaper to go with a safari company with a driver/guide who knows the area.there prices normally includes the cruiser or minibus with a driver and very important fuel.that also includes his accommodation and meals, and you get there knowledge if you get an experienced driver.

Good Luck and enjoy the safari.

Amboseli to Serengeti is very far,so will get tired and won't be comfortable for the rest of game drives.

I suggest to start the tour by Amboseli,Lake Nakuru,Masai Mara and then cross through Isebania border. This way you can drive to Serengeti as Masai Mara is very closed to Serengeti.

Day 1: Arrive Nairobi:

Day 2: Nairobi – Amboseli National Park:

Day 3: Amboseli – Lake Nakuru National Park:

Day 4: Lake Nakuru – Masai Mara Game Reserve:

Day 5: Full day in Masai Mara Game Reserve:

Day 6: : Masai Mara – Tanzania (Isebania border): -Serengeti National Park

Day 7:Full Day Serengeti National Park

Day 8 : Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro.

Day 9 : Ngorongoro Crater – Arusha .

Day 10 : Arusha Morning Cultural Tour – Kilimanjaro Airport for flight back

Late-Dec/early Jan is peak season in both countries, with prices to match. It is also 'summer' in East Africa, so days will be warm to hot and if on the coast, also very humid.

With 10/days, it is NOT recommended to try to visit both countries*, even with the itinerary Zanzilandholidays suggested. There are some very long drives where you will spend more time in transit than actual game viewing. The drive from the Mara in Kenya to Serengeti in Tanzania can take 8-10/hrs (or a full day or daylight hours, when on the Equator) and on some nasty roads. Many 'group' tours do similar itineraries as above, but even those are for a longer period of time, as 14-18/days.... lots of land to cover regardless how close they appear on a map.

*Visas for each, $50 for Kenya, $100 for Tanzania, plus Yellow Fever inoculation for entry to Tanzania/Zanzibar on entry from Kenya, besides the malaria meds, trip insurance and other incidentals, i.e., tips, souvenirs, etc.

Also, there are more air carriers flying into Nairobi/NBO at competitive pricing, vs to Kilimanjaro/JRO Tanzania which prices can be anywhere from $400-600/more expensive. Something to consider, so check a site as Kayak, www.kayak.com or schedules/fares during this peak season.

And, if you wish to also visit the coast of either country, requires minimum 3/nts, leaving then only 7/nts for safari. You can see what the issue can be. Too much to see in too little time.

Bus, trains, taxi - made me laugh, this isn't Chi-town, or The Big Apple, where we are rather spoiled... this is Africa!

Best you contact a specialist in the States or an outfitter in Kenya or Tanzania, KATO (Kenya) or TATOTZ (Tanzania) for a list of outfitters. Select 5-6, send individual emails to each with your info: when, # of people, areas of interest, type of lodging (lodges, permanent or mobile tent camps or 'camping' ) with estimated budget and see their replies. If you don't like their replies, send to another 5-6, but don't overdo it or it will get even more confusing.

Also, go out and get a few good guidebooks, where there are specific ones on each country, or try Fodor's "Complete Safari Planning Guide" that covers all the safari countries.

Good luck and do return here with further questions.

Can you tell me what KATO is and how important is it that a tour co. is registered with them?

Kato is the Kenya Association of Tour Operators

it offers no guarantees but is an indicator that the company meets certain basic membership standards and is likely to be reputable

Like someone else said above 10-11 days will not be enough for Kenya and Tanzania Safari. You can add more days is possible or else stick to one country so as to have quality time and not to feel rushed while on safari.
