Monarch airways to Kenya

Hi

Anybody been with Monarch to Kenya recently?

We have looked at a few holidays and they seem to be the cheapest but are a bit worried about aircraft legroom and do they have reps in resorts. We are looking to go to Southern Palms as we tried Boa Bab in 2011 and found it a bit of a commercialisd set up.

Thanks Allen

Hi,

I don't think Monarch fly the Kenya route any more, the last flight was early November last year.

I was talking to the pilot of one of those last flights and he was telling me that they had not won the contract for the coming year. He said they were making no money on long haul, often flying with half empty planes, and the new management wanted to move away from long haul.

I'd read that they want to concentrate on the budget short haul market, and want to relaunch themselves as a more up market competitor to Easyjet and RyanAir. So I guess they made a very low bid.

This seems to be borne out by their website, I just tried a couple of random dates and there were no flights available (I tried a couple of dates for holidays as well and they came back as 'out of season' - their graphic was showing the whole year as out of season)

I think Thomson Air is the only UK charter company flying to Mombasa at the moment

As Bruce wrote -Monarch are selling a package tour but the flights are with Kenya Airways and you will only be allowed 20kg`s hold luggage and 10 hand luggage..

I recently met a couple who read on the KQ web they were allowed two cases of 23 kgs plus 10 hand luggage but on checking in were charged £160 !! and another £58 in Nairobi for transfer down to Mombasa.

Edna

The baggage allowance is always a grey area for sure, we are looking at flying Eithad Manchester to Nairobi but again will only be entitled to 30kg on the Nairobi to Mombasa leg with KQ, its a nightmare !!!

I know Edna, we have volunteers coming out in October so Eithad or Qatar Airways are coming in the cheapest, long stayover's and only 23kg luggage instead of the 46kg hold & 10kg hand with KQ/KLM, so annoying !!
