Kenyan Driver Tip- Is $200/9 days adequate?(3pax, 1 vehicle)

Based on my research our party of 3 pax will tip our Kenyan Driver $200 for the safari van. We will use his service for 9 days. Any thoughts/ comments?? We don’t want to be the Crazy Americans who tip obnoxiously and make it hard for every other tourist group but want to be reasonable too.

Will appreciate any guidance or feedback this community can provide.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Just for context

around 45% of the population of Kenya exist below the World Bank’s poverty measure of $1.25 a day which currently equates to about 105 KES

Until last month (May, 2013, when the incoming President decreed that the Minimum Wage level would be increased by 14%) the legal National Minimum Wage for a General Labourer (includes cleaner, gardener, etc) was 428/- a day in Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu and 202/- a day everywhere else.

For a waiter or cook it was 445/- in the 3 cities, 261/- elsewhere

These rates obviously would not apply to guides who are skilled, with different degrees of formal qualifications and do not have full regular employment through the year, but they give some background.

The Gross Domestic Product (the total value of all the goods and services produced in the country in a year) per capita (per head - divided by the population) was $808 (68,600/-) in 2011 and was expected to grow by just over 3% last year, which translates to around 192/- per person per day
