Kenya - Tanzania Safari - Dec 2013

Hi, I am planning a 13 day safari trip and plan to cover Kenya and Tanzania.

Nairobi - Nakuru(1 night) - Mara (3 nights) - Serengeti (3 nights) - Ngorongoro (1 night) - Manyara (2 nights) - Amboselli (2 nights) - Nairobi.

Questions:

1. Am I spending too many days?

2. I have very limited time to plan this trip, I would greatly appreciate any tour operator names you could give me.

3. What would be the cost of this trip for 2 people, decent accommodation?

4. Thinking of a private tour so that we could follow animals and I am also really into birding, but wondering if group is more fun. Don't want to be too isolated during this long trip. Please advise. Thanks!

<< Nairobi - Nakuru(1 night) - Mara (3 nights) - Serengeti (3 nights) - Ngorongoro (1 night) - Manyara (2 nights) - Amboselli (2 nights) - Nairobi.<<

Doable, but lots of very long drives. Nakuru/Mara - 5-6/hrs; Mara/Serengeti - min 10/hrs; Serengeti/Ngo - varies between 4-6/hrs; Ngo/Manyara - 2/hrs; Manyara/Amboseli - 8/hrs; Amboseli/NBO - 4/hrs.

For the Serengeti in December you should lodge/camp in the South or Ndutu areas, where the 'calving' herds shoujld be located.

Few outfitters in either country actually have offices in both countries or their guides/vehicles can easily cross borders. Even if licensed in both countries. However, most outfitters in either country have a partner outfitter in the other country who will handle the other.

Prices will be better up till 20th Dec, when they go into Holiday rates... keep this in mind and know that for the holiday period space in both countries is becoming (if not already) limited.

Good luck as you've got quite a bit of research to do.

Thanks so much for the replies. I don't want to waste precious time in travelling. What if I combine Tanzania and Rwanda? fly out of Kili into Rwanda and leave to US from Rwanda. Doable? logistics? Please share your thoughts.

9. Re: Kenya - Tanzania Safari - Dec 2013

Hi-

I have a revised itinerary and some questions:

Nairobi(1) - Mara (2 nights) - Serengeti (4 nights) - Ngorongoro (1 night) - Manyara (2 nights) - Amboselli (2 nights) - Nairobi.

Question:

1. I am skipping Lake Nakuru. Mistake?

2. My trip involves a lot of driving (which I am prepared for), but also one dimensional. Would you recommend doing something else?

3. How much should I expect to spend on this trip (private safari, tent accommodation). I am getting varying quotes and a little confused.

Please advise.

A bit better - of the 4/nts Serengeti, 1 will be the drive from Mara into the Serengeti. Where in the Serengeti does the TO hve you staying?

For Manyara you don't need more than 1/nt. By the time you arrive from Serengeti at Ngorongoro, you;ll probably have to take the crater tour next morning (limited to 6/hrs) and the best time to visit.

Once completed crater tour, drive the 2.5/hrs to Manyara for afternon game drive, overnight. Next day you can do early drive at Manyara and then be prepared for a long day drive via Arusha to Namanga border and then onto Arusha, probably not arriving till late-afternoon (maybe dusk)... this is where I would add the o/n shown for Manyara to Amboseli.

Prices will vary, all depending on the accommodations contained in the proposals received. There really is no 'set' price.

You might want to post those that are of interest, abbreviated (don't need the descriptions)... simply with 'date' 'where' 'accomm (lodge/tent" and price... we can than comment with info in front of us.
