Safari costs

I'm looking at options for a safari holiday in July 2015. We will be a party of nine including five children. I have a quote of about $11,000 for a 7-night itinerary in Uganda using mid-range accommodation, but for Kenya it's looking more like $19,000. Do I just need to get more quotes, or is Kenya fundamentally more expensive?

Granted July is peak season at highest prices, of course you should get competitive prices.

If working with a UK tour operator expect rates to be higher so suggest you contact an in-country Kenyan outfitter. Many names can be found reading thru the various threads on this Forum or see the KATO site, www.katokenya.org - with names of those in-country.

Read the details of those shown and select/ send to 5-6 each an individual email with your details: when you wish to travel,total # of days in Kenya, # of people (ages of children, those sharing with adults, as discounts available for many), type of accomm (lodges/camps) preferred, estimated budget. Review and be sure to be comparing like with like.

If you're not satisfied with responses from these few, send to another grup of 5-6 outfitters.

It does take a bit of research and thus time. Besides '15 rates not published yet but will be shortly.

Good luck!

Kenya would be more expensive than Uganda, simply because there's more to see in Kenya:

1. Big 5 Safari in the Mara: lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo & rhino. The Mara "probably" attracts the highest no. of visitors from around the World. Heaps of other NPs like Tsavo & Amboseli. Tsavo to see famous Man-Eaters (or lions). Amboseli to see the Elephants against backdrop of Kilimanjaro.

2. The Rift Valley runs across Kenya.

3. Mt Kenya & Aberdares are a great locations to relax & unwind.

4. Mombasa beaches are some of finest in the world. Clean white sand with pristine water water of the Indian Ocean.

.................+++ Plus much more !!!
