There were reliable reports this morning that Amu Ranch, which is under the Lamu Conservation Trust and protects a sensitive and unique environment on the Indian Ocean near Lamu, had its offices burnt during the night. There is no word of any fatalities among KWS staff, who provide ranger services there. However, vehicles, guns and other equipment were seized by the attackers who then moved on.
No word either on whether this conservancy will be able to accept visitors, though it is not on the main safari circuits.
The Lamu Conservation Trust is running several projects to save a dwindling population of elephants, lions, giraffes, buffalo and other animals in the far north coast of Kenya near Somalia.
