An afternoon free in Nairobi...what to do??

We have an afternoon (Friday) in Nairobi staying at the holiday inn before travelling home, two adults and a 12 yr old. Can anyone recommend what we do with our time...I am a bit apprehensive and don't fancy wandering about aimlessly! We will also have to eat somewhere in the evening...ideas please....

You could go to Karen and visit the Giraffe centre, Karen Blixen Museum etc. The Elephant ophanage is only open between 11am -12noon unless you sponsor an elephant and then you can visit for an hour at 5pm. There is a few other places in the area but it all depends on your flight times etc.

Friday night, traffic can be hectic in Nairobi, so you may need to head to the airport earlier than expected.

Carnivores restaurant is a good touristy restaurant your family would enjoy but its all dependent on your departure time etc and whether you can take your luggage with you or whether to have a meal closer to your Hotel.

You could do Kazuri Beads - they're in Karen, you could also take in the Nairobi Safari Walk and have lunch in Rangers Restaurant (been there a few times, very good service and the burgers are fab!!)

Carnivores is OK but it's a long dining experience so if you're short on time, don't bother. With the above, you could be over and done in 3 hours giving you enough time to get to the airport etc.

Edited: here's a link to their website:

All of the suggestions above are good.

Check with Holiday Inn (most hotels have a Tour Desk), to arrange for these activities. They'll provide driver/vehicle to get you to/from, back to your hotel to collect luggage and off to the airport for your homebound flight.

You can contact other companies to compare prices, which should include your guide/vehicle for transport, entry fees (where applicable), dinner at eatery of your choice (though some will have you pay direct which can be done by credit card).

There are all kinds of cuisine, besides Carnivore (mainly meat, but has vegitarian), Tamarind (fish/seafood), Mediterraneo (Italian), Tamambo (continental), also Thai, Indian, etc.
