Ashlee,

Pretty much everything you want to know about the Nairobi - Mombasa train is here

http://www.seat61.com/Kenya.htm

It doesn't sound like you are but if you are coming before April the train service is cancelled as they are dedicating the line to shipping the huge freight backlog out of Mombasa port

The train to MBA is a long, overnight & a terribly slow journey. Unless you want to do it for the "experience" then you are better off going by bus.

Not long ago, it was delayed by as much as 6 hours - ugh !!

Except during peak times (Easter, Christmas, public holidays) there's no need to book in advance. There are plenty of bus companies. I always use Mash Bus (last year around 1200 KES). If you want to book in advance you could use this website: http://www.emanamba.com/welcome/?go_main=1

How can a mere bus be more comfortable than a proper train with private rooms with beds, and a restaurant with tablecloths and cutlery?

But true, this is academic until 2 April, as the train won't resume till then.

When it does, it'll once again be one of Kenya's unmissable classic experiences.

Consider, in this order:

1. Modern Coast -Oxygen

2. Mash Cool

3. Coast Air

All buses above are Air Con & offices located on Accra Rd

I highly recommend Modern Coast Oxygen b'coz the drivers are quite disciplined. (which is quite important especially on Kenyan roads !)

I prefer a quick internal flight of under an hour to hours of sitting on a bus playing games with trucks and matatus.
