Road transport or Air

Again for travelling in May 2013, which is the best combination. Mara-Ambesoli-Samburu or Mara-Ambesoli-Nakuru? Is is possible to combine air and road trips for internal travelling to reduce the cost?how?

I would fly from Nairobi to Samburu, then onto Mara, and then onto Amboseli. Use the camp vehicles.

Flying will be more expensive the driving from place to place, but it will be more comfortable, less time consuming, and IMHO safer.

I am with roadwarrior on the routing and flying. It is also not necessary that at the end of the day air transfer would work out much more expensive, often it is very similar to road transfers or only slightly more vs time, safety and convenience. Also combining road and air may work out even more expensive as the vehicle will have to be positioned at a particular place or leave you somewhere and still have an empty leg. On a simple routing like yours if budget permits use air transfers. There are direct flights from Samburu to Mara - very convenient.

Ditto what Larissa advises... flying doesn't necessarily have to be more expensive. Besides with any of those choices, the road transfers are all rather long. some that can't be done in 1/day, i.e., Samburu/Mara... vs a flight of from 45/min to maybe 1.5/hrs... fly, fly, fly!

For more adventurer tourist, Its always good to use the road transport unless otherwise. By the road you will experience a lot including local villages, towns, locals, and less known attractions but worthy a visit eg. mt. longonot and Thompson falls. Air transport is very expensive whereby the lodges and camps safari vehicles are even more expensive. Well, if at all you have limited days for the safari, Its fine to use air to save your game viewing time. Your itinerary is very simple, from Nairobi proceed to samburu - Nakuru - Masai mara.
