Mombasa nearly lost its famous tusks

a few days ago the famous tusks on Moi Avenue caught fire, fortunately the Mombasa Fire Engine was functional and had water on board and saved the day.

it transpired that homeless street children had removed a panel and were living inside, and had lit a fire that got out of hand

Sad isnt it they have to resort living in there when all that wealth of the "big guns " could quite easily and cheaply errect a suitable building just for shelter,

the police have chased them out the trees - off the roundabouts and now with the tusks damaged its back to the grotty docks again ... poor kids .

one word of warning to any tourist wanting to give a street boy money - DON`T it is tempting but the chances are he will get beaten up and have his limbs broken because the bigger louts will not believe you only gave them a few bob ...

Years ago we used to drive a van into Mombasa with bread /milk give out three pieces of bread to each child and a sachet of milk - three? yes - because that child would always get one slice snatched. ..cruel world ain`t it!

I believe another lady and her hubby used to hand out bread?
