Overland from UK to Mombasa

HI there

Anyone done this and any advice would be appreciated as we intend to drive a Minibus and a Van in February with 6 people and lots of donated things to be distributed and the Minibus donated to Tumaini Childrens Home in Banburi.

I take it the route be down through France, Spain and then over to Tunisia? You then hit Libya, Egypt, and Sudan and they are not what you would call "safe" at the moment. That is not taking into account the state of the roads and none roads you will have to drive?

This is a huge undertaking and you are going to hit a hell of a lot of problems on the way.

Also will border guards in these democratic non corrupt countries be happy to turn a blind eye to all the goodies in the back?

Very very brave trip in my opinion.

A friend of mine did a solo trip on a motorbike from Moscow to Cape Town. His trip was via Europe, across to Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, detour to Uganda, back to Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and South Africa. It was in 2010 just before all the trouble in North Africa. And then he went back up through Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Burundi, Rwanda and Uganda. By then North Africa was a no go zone, so he could not continue, although his idea had been to go back to Moscow overland, and he flew to Italy and back by road to Moscow. Epic journey, sleeping in his tent on the side of the road in various places! Solo... I have no idea how he did it. Another amazing thing is that he did not get anything stolen. Incredible adventure not for the faint hearted! It was not easy I must say. He had a couple of days of R&R with us on the way south.

Probably with problems in Libya and Egypt and quite tense situation in Sudan, it is not the best time to travel overland.

You also need to think about the duty you will have to pay to leave a vehicle in Kenya. In 2011 we drove from the UK to Mongolia and left our vehicle there to be auctioned for charity. The import duty then was £2000 which was just about what our car raised. For 2014 the import duty has risen to £5000 so you'd have to be prepared to leave a reasonable vehicle to justify those costs. Mongolia also no longer accept ambulances or other utility vehicles as they did in 2011. Not sure about Kenya but don't assume you can just turn up with a vehicle and abandon it in Kenya. And as Mallamombasa said.......that's a heck of a lot of borders to get through with donated goods!

The duty payable on the minibus would be more than 60% of its value.

From the Kenya Revenue Agency:

"The duty payable on the importation of a motor vehicle is as follows:

Import Duty: 25% of the CIF value of the vehicle

Excise Duty: 20% of the (CIF value + Import Duty)

VAT: 16% of the (CIF value + Import Duty + Excise Duty)

IDF: 2.25% of the CIF value or Ksh. 5,000, whichever is higher, is payable.

CIF – This is the customs value of the vehicle i.e. the Cost, Insurance & Freight paid for the vehicle.

The CIF value of the vehicle is also deduced from the Current Retail Selling Price (CRSP) of the vehicle"

It must also less than 8 years old

Its a huge undertaking, you are planning.

The vehicle duty amounts to around 75% of the vehicles value as assessed by Kenya Revenue Authority. Certain specialist vehicles are duty exempt, but I don't think minibuses are included. If you drive into Kenya, you can remain in country for up to 6 months (temporary import), but then duty becomes payable if and when the vehicle is left. You are also likely to get charged duty for the donated goods, so this needs to be researched, so that you do not take items that can be obtained in Kenya.

You should also carefully consider your choice of vehicle and restrict it to a make that is easy to service and maintain in Kenya, to avoid the vehicle becoming a 'millstone' in terms of running costs. For example; the Ford Transit is virtually non existent in Kenya. You need to be looking at japanese makes.

Bear in mind that vehicles are expensive to insure, fuel and service, in Kenya. We pay around twice as much for insurance as we would in the UK, so for a charitable organisation such as a childrens home, the cost of running a vehicle might outweigh the benefits.

Lots of homework to do!

Just worked out the compound duty from my previous post and K is right it adds up to just over 76%.

Just realised you mentioned a van as well. What are you planning to do with the van, drive back home or try and sell it?

Given the length of time it is going to take, and therefore food and accommodation costs for 6 people for the duration, getting them back home, fuel costs, tolls, visas, consumables for the vehicles, the risks of breakdown or mechanical failures let alone the other risks inherent in parts of the route, if someone has donated the minibus and you already have it wouldn't you be better shipping the goods and the minibus out in a container?

If someone hasn't donated the minibus and you are going to buy it, wouldn't you be better buying a Toyota Hiace or Nissan Caravan (the two most common models of matatu) out here and letting someone else deal with all the red tape, duty, etc?

Doff, as usual to the point! In addition to the above there is a railway development levy at 1.5% of CIF for all imports into the country, no exceptions, even diplomats and EPZ must pay. This levy was introduced wef 01/07/13.

Currently there are a lot of very decent second hand vehicles available already landed in Kenya, duty paid. Also majority of goods are available locally: stationery, clothes, sanitary pads, food items, bed linen, blankets, mosquito nets, etc.

All donations are dutiable and taxable, unless an exemption is obtained. Exemption can be given for duty and VAT, there is a long process to obtain it, but not for railway development levy, that is payable in any case. All goods brought into the country, if they are subject to pre shipping inspection at origin (based on HS code of commodities, this can be checked with Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) or with SGS or Bureau Veritas in UK in your case), must be inspected and a quality report must be sent by inspecting body to Kenya. Then a Certificate of Conformity (CoC) must be obtained locally which is then presented at the time of customs clearance. In absence of CoC a penalty of 15% of CIF is applicable, payable to KEBS. Inspection at origin can only be done if IDF (Imports Declaration Form) has been processed in Kenya.

Recently there has been a notification that no goods, that are subject to pre inspection but have not been inspected at origin, would be allowed in Kenya, exception are the country of loading where there is no KEBS appointed body (very few). This however is currently on hold, so uninspected goods are still allowed if they conform in quality, but penalty of 15% of CIF is payable. The notice can come to effect any time however.

Without a proper homework and proper documentation one may incur very high charges which are not always necessary and have their goods ceased by customs.

Good point. In 2011 it was less than 10 years in Mongolia. Next year it is less than 5 years. Don't assume that this won't change in Kenya if they have a surfeit of older vehicles as suggested by Larissa.

IMHO save yourself a lot of headaches, CCI's are not exempt from Import Tax and believe me thats not all you will be charged, its a minefield. We have brought items into to Kenya but long term & in hindsight buying the stuff here would have made more financial sense to the charity and you are supporting the local economy.

As Kileleshwa says only either Toyota or Mitsubishi are suitable for Kenya, otherwise you will pay a fortune for spare parts that may have to come from Nairobi (if you are lucky), our friend has to wait for parts to be shipped out from the UK for some of his vehicles. Many vehicles coming from the UK have to be specially adapted for the Kenyan roads so thats an extra expense as well.

A good quality 2nd hand minbus can be bought out here for approximately £16,000 with extra springs/shocks, roof rack etc making it ideal for carrying goods from the markets.
