BEWARE of Chinese toilets!!!

You must squat because Chinese toilets are in the ground in the form of a bowl or a trough (there are no toilet seats). American toilets are a rarity. Also, don't be surprised if there are no stall doors and flies buzzing around you as you are going.

Also, take PLENTY of toilet paper and SOAP (I recommend liquid soap in a travel-size plastic shampoo bottle) because toilet paper and soap are NEVER (well, very very rarely) provided.

I have heard they have installed American toilets in the Olympic stadiums but I have a feeling those will all be clogged. Every American toilet I ever saw in a public bathroom was clogged.

This is nothing new and most public restrooms are like this.

I have been to China over 10 times for a total exceeding 30 weeks and I encountered squat toilets maybe 3 or 4 times. Most likely to come across them in the countryside or in not very fancy restaurants. But you should always carry some toilet paper (or Kleenex) just in case.

We were in China for two weeks and I thought the toilets (whether squat of western) were remarkably clean. It's really not that big a deal. Put a little pack of travel tissues in one pocket and a travel container of hand sanitizer in your other pocket and you'll be fine. I really don't know what all the fuss is about. Just buy the hand sanitizer in little bottles at any drug store/Walmart or Target before you leave. I found the tissues were actually cheaper and readily available in China.

I was actually pleasantly surprised by the cleanliness of the toilets, squat and western, in China. We only needed our own TP/tissues about half the time, otherwise it was provided. Soap was often missing but hand sanitizer is one of my travel staples.

And regarding the hotel staff, faded US bills, etc. I guess the OP didn't do any research BEFORE the trip, because that stuff is all common knowledge if you check out TA a few times and/or read the first 5 pages of a guide book.

How do you know which toilets are Chinese or American?

Are squat toilets Chinese? or are they French, Swiss or something else? I have seen them in public places in France, Switzerland and Vietnam.

While Kohlers are rare outside of the US, are non-squat toilets uniquely American? Most toilets in the US are probably Chinese, at least Chinese made...

You are telling me those "American Standard" toilets are not made in America? ::shock:: The Chinese must be trying to rule the world.

Last I recall most public toilets in Naples, Italy have no toilet seats. I better stay home.
