Help with Trip

My wife and I together with another couple are planinng a 28 day trip to China in September and would like some advice.

Since this will be first and last trip to China so would like to see as much of the country as we can.

We are thinking of spending 4 nights in Shanghai to start the trip ,see the city and get over jet lag.

Next, fast train to Beijing for 5 nights. ( is this to long )

We would like to end the trip with 4 nights in Yangshuo and finally 4 nights in Hong Kong.

This leaves 11 days to visit other cities like Chengde,Xian, Chengdu and Lijang which are high on our list to see.

Any suggestion as how long to stay in each place and maybe other more interesting places to go.

We plan to fly to most places other than train to Beijing and Xian.

I know we will lose about 1/2 day for each stop we make so thats a consideration as well.

Also, is Ctrip best for booking flights in China?

Thanks for any help

1. Re: Help with Trip

Starting with your last question, there are three major online travel agents: ctrip.com, travelzen.com and elong.net. I find that ctrip has the best website and interesting tools but in the end I buy from travelzen because they do not charge an extra 3% for foreign credit cards.

Five days for Beijing is fine and typical.

Regarding you extra 11 days. Chengde and Xi'An are easy to get to and not far from the places you are visiting. Lijiang is the furthest away. All four places are good but offer something different. Chengde is mostly about the temples, Xi'An s an capital of China at one point has a lot of history and more to see than Chengde. Chengdu has the pandas and some interesting attractions if you get out of the city. Lijiang has the old town, some scenery and the minorities.

In the end it depends on your interests. Hard for us to decide for you.

As a local tour guide in Shanghai , I would like to suggest the following itineraries in China for your 28 days’ holiday:

4 nights in Shanghai—take a train to Beijing

5 nights in Beijing (enough time)—Fly to Xi’an

2 nights in Xi’an ( enough)—fly to Chengdu

4 nights in Chengdu—Fly to Lijiang

3 nights in Lijinag—fly to yangshuo

3 nights in yangshuo—fly to hongkong

4 nights in Hongkong (enough)

Then the rest time will spent on the road.

Ctrip is a good agency, but you can get cheaper price from Elong for same flight .

Enjoy your holiday.

Are you going to do it yourself or go with a tour operator?

If going alone make sure you take plenty of packets of paper tissues as most places do not provide toilet paper etc etc.

Have a card with all the hotels names and addresses written in Chinese Characters for EACH person in your group for taxi drivers etc. keep these card on you all the time. also with the phone number and area code!

DO NOT drink TAP water. buy bottled water. Boil weater everytime if you do use for making tea.

Kind regards

Albon

take Lhasa into consederation, you may start at Chengdu and take the famous train to Lhasa, during the way you can enjoy all the beauty,Snow mountains and grasslands, scattered herds of yak and nomads on the plateau, this is real Shangri-La.Xi'an has been China's capital for thousand years, if you are interested in the Chinese culture, then you won't skip it. Chengdu is fun and there are pandas, as for Lijiang. that is a mysterious place, a lot of ancient towns and ethnic minority which will present you something diffierent. Guilin is really a good place. I think for the trip in China you may consider it like this : first arrive Shanghai, spend five days and fly to Beijing, five days in beijing is very typical, then fly to Xi'an,then comes Chengdu Lhasa, Lijiang, 11 days is OK for those place, maybe a little bit tight, it is up to you. hope you enjoy you China trip best regards .
