Air China

Travelling in March with Air China and have been unable to find a way of pre selecting our seats.

The travel agent has told us that we will only be able to do this when we check in online 24 hours before our flight.

I have never experienced this with any other airline and wondered if anyone else knew if this advice is correct.

Some airlines really do that. So might be correct.

That seems to be the norm to me. Have only ever been able to choose the seats 24 hours before whoever we have flown with.

Flying domestic? Yes this is standard.

This is normal for 90% of airlines. You cannot select your seat on British Airways until T-24 (unless you pay). Virgin Atlantic allow you to request a seat, but it is not guaranteed.

Out of interest, which airlines do you fly that do allow you to select seats prior to online check in? (for free)

I don't know if you are asking about China or elsewhere but in Canada we never pay and I don't remember paying for the last few trips with US airlines. With these airlines I always select my seat when booking. They will often ask you to pay for some premium seats (those with more space like the emergency exits ones).
