there have been a lot of tour groups put forward on here. I just want to know the best ones that don't take you to too many of those "shopping stops"

china highlights

are some mentioned. Anybody that has been recently that could give advice on these would be most appreciated as well as any others that aren't too pricey but offer a good service.

We are looking at mid Sept for our trip as that is suppose to be a nice time to go, but you can go in the spring as well (March/April/May)

Hi Leelee322,

Intrepid Travel in Melbourne runs budget tours to China, and check the itinerary and quote in their website.Traveling around China in winter when there is less tourists enable to help you save some money, however, the there is a discount of the quality of the sceneries as well.

Hi! you also have g adventures (I took 2 tours with them, elsewhere and it was perfect). I think they are little bit cheaper than Intrepid.

Hi we are going in April when weather pleasant and not as busy tourist wise as sept. We have booked a private tour with china odyssey (excellent reviews on tripadvisor). With this type of tour you can basically choose your own itinerary if you like and so far have been extremely helpful with our enquires as we are travelling with our disabled son. Good luck!

I followed a recommendation from a friend living in China and went with Travel-the-Real-China.com. They do a lot of trips for expats living in China or expat families. We had a private tour for two, my friend and I, that was fabulous. The itinerary was custom and packed in as much as we could have managed to see. We were not escorted by the same person all the way through but had local English speaking guides and drivers in each location. Each one met us at the plane/train/next driver and got us off to the next stop. Travel-the-Real-China booked all the hotels which were all clean and very nice and perfect of us as well as all the transportation. Everything went without a hitch and I know that our guides were in contact with the travel agent every day. We talked with John McKenna, the owner, just about every day ourselves as he wanted to know that we were happy and enjoying ourselves. Best of all, it was all at inside-of-China prices. I will email John first thing when I go back to China and only wish he could help me in other countries.

We went from mid March to mid April 2013. The plan was to follow spring from south to north. Mother Nature played a little trick on us and started spring a little late last year apparently. I'd go about 2 weeks later. Spring is a good time to go, not hot yet and hardly any Westerners touring yet.

Travel tip: don't miss Yunnan. Spectacular scenery, wonderful minority people, Tibetan culture. It was our most favorite part of a 30 day trip. Oh, and we specified NO SHOPPING and each guide was told that so no factory "tours" etc.
