Tickets are hard to get. You might need a copy of the Tibet permit to board the train. Once in Tibet, you will need to be on a tour with a guide everyday you are in Tibet. You must organise the tour before you go to Tibet. Do NOT mention Tibet when you get your Chinese visa. The train takes 45 hours. Take snacks to eat. See http://www.spinn.cn/en/tibet/index.html for a Tibet FAQ.

You might find this website useful. It has all sorts of info & gets updated: …typepad.com/life_on_the_tibetan_plate/2007/…

For the train from Beijing to Lhasa: www.seat61.com/China.htm#Lhasa%20&%20Tibet

One thing you will need is a good sun block. Buy one before you get to China. You can of course buy sunblock in China but the best ones are imported, so expensive. If you forget & have to buy some in China be careful if buying a Chinese brand - some of them have menthol added & it burns your skin !!!!,

At high altitude, especially in summer, you can burn very quickly & easily. If you are wearing light & thin T-Shirts you can sometimes get burnt through them so make sure you keep protected. Hat & good sunglasses as well.

To get a train ticket you are probably going to have to go through an agent that does your permit as well. Tibet is strictly group travel now. Before the olympics when you bought your ticket & permit the agent used to hook you up with a "group". Once you got to Lhasa you could go your separate ways & travel independently. Not now - you need to be in a group and stick with it to some extent.

Have a read thru the Tibet forum & you will pick up heaps of info.
