traveling to China late June 2012.. adventurous family of 5

we are very motivated with 3 teenagers.. meaning we'll REST when we get home. this will be our first trip there but not our last.

Flying into Beijing and out of Shanghai. we will be there 12 nights and 11 days. Is it possible to visit Xi'an, Shaanxi, China and Guilin, Guangxi, China as well?

How should we plan to travel between cities? plane and train?

we will definately hire a guide and driver/van where necessary.

thank you in advance for your help.

You should assume 4-5 days for Beijing and about 2 for Shanghai. You could spend extra days in Shanghai if you do some side trips from there. XI'An is a couple of days and Yangshuo 3 or 4.

So I think you should skip Xi'An for this time and go to Yangshuo which your kids will enjoy more.

You should fly, the country is quite large. Check ctrip.com

I would spend 4-5 days in Beijing, 1.5 days in Xian, and 3 days in Shanghai. You'll lose some times in transit. I'd skip Guilin.

..

thanks everyone for the replies.. i appreciate the time and effort.

BeijingExperts... "Shanghai and Beijing Beijing 3 days each.Xi`an 2 days and 3 days in Guilin". > sounds good to us.

Tom N..." From Beijing to Xian you may consider taking an overnight train (11 hrs trip). Remaining part of the trip by air…."

can we do an overnight train on any other of these legs?

3 days in each Beijing and Shanghai is not well balanced. You must have 10 times (at least) more tourist attractions in Beijing than Shanghai.

Hi jrsc,

When you say 11 days - are they full days ( not including arrival & departure days for China).

Trying to fit in Beijing, Xi'an, Guilin & Shanghai is going to be very squishy. On paper, yes it looks okay but you will loose valuable time travelling between places & checking in & out of hotels.

You would be better to take out Xi'an & just concentrate on 3 places rather than time lost waiting at airports & in transit.

If you realIy want to fit in Xi'an, one way of doing it is get the night sleeper train from Beijing which arrives in at Xi'an early morning. You will have the day to see the main sights - Terracotta Warriors, Big Goose Pagoda, Old city area ( Walls & Muslim Street). Then get an evening flight to Guilin.

I travel with teens too and they would love Yangshuo - head straight there from Guilin airport rather than staying or seeing Guilin. If you give up Xi'an it will give you more time in Yangshou or Beijing or you could add it to Shanghai - do a day trip to a water town like Tongli.

It is very tempting to try and squeeze different locations in but its sometimes better to take a bit more time and relax a bit rather than the departure scramble at hotels to get to the next destination / airport.

Apart from Beijing to Xi'an by train ( if you do it) you are best to use flights. Using trains to get between your other destinations wont be possible with the time you have ( and the trains between these cities are not the new fast, modern one's you read about - they are more roll your jeans up to go to the loo type).

Thanks Jean Pierre and Annie. we land in Beijing at 11:30 pm on a thursday. we have 11 full days and 12 nights and leave on the second tuesday from Shanghai on a 4:10 pm flight.

yes, we push it to the limit. if it's too crazyand doesn't make sense, we won't try to do so much. (when we visited Egypt in 2010, the kids were wiped out, sleeping in the van as we were driven around but it was well worth the effort)

the night sleeper train from beijing to Xian would be interesting. i like your ideas, we would fly from Xian to Guilin and i assume Guilin to Shanghai. we are water people so heading directly to Yangshou is a GREAT idea.. thank you.. i can only imagine how breathtaking the views are (amongst the Karst formations) if we can ferry down the Li River to Yangshou with our luggage, and spend the night near Yangshou. Do we fly to Shanghai from Guilin?
