Fun but not nightlife? Not sure what to suggest. There's the Olympic Green, see the stadia lit up, or wandering around the Qianmen or Houhai areas, maybe taking in shopping and snacks. Perhaps an acrobatics show? Difficult to think of things that might suit your description. Plenty of restaurants reviewed on this site - take your pick.

Thanks! I of course like to drink and all that. Just didn't want bars as a suggestion. Thank you for your advice

If you want to experience Beijing just go out and walk around. It's a very safe city.

Go to "The Place" (Shimaotianjie) to see the giant screen.

Go to Qianmen street area for dinner and walk around.. you have both the new and old sections.

Then there is always Sanlitun for shopping and dining.

For dining and a nice atmosphere you can go to ghost street (line 5 - Beixinqiao).

Cold, yes. Dusty, no. Dusty? Stay in a building? Explain.

Pollution haze. Not very pleasant - itchy eyes and throat for me!

Sounds like part of the Beijing experience to me. However, I think you'd generally have to agree that staying inside rather defeats any purpose of visiting in the first place. Besides, pollution level is an unpredictable variable.

I was rather hoping for a response from #7 - just want to see how long it takes for the next batch of tour company advertising to start. How many different screen names have you had now, Elsie?
