Docking at Tianjin

Cruising Taiwan(Taipei,Keelung),Japan(Nagasaki)South Korea(Busan and Jeju Island). Then 3 Days Tianjin and then Shanghai(2 days).

So the question is what tours can I organise on my own, there are 4 of us in total, all pensioners, but still able to get around no problem. But looking at the ships tours, the prices add up to an awful lot,for example they want £145pp for an 11 hour trip to Great Wall, surely 4 of us can get a better deal, not sure I want to do an 11 hour trip anyway, all suggestions welcome for here and all other stopovers.

You don't want to spend any time in Tianjin. Nothing to see there, you go to Beijing right away.

You can take a taxi to the train station then a train to Beijing (30 minutes) or hire a driver to take you to Beijing.

Once in Beijing you find yourself a hotel and can visit most places except the Great Wall by yourself using the subway. If you wish you can hire a private guide which will cost no more than 500RMB per day for the 4 of you. For the Great Wall you need a driver and no guide. It is about 1.5 hours out of town. A driver will cost 600 to 700RMB to take you take and back (all these costs are total not per person)

Be aware that your ship will be a 100 miles away from Beijing city centre. Any tours from the ship will necessitate an awfully long commute. Much better if you can relocate to a local hotel during your stay.

You'd better book a tour in advance, then the driver and guide will pick up you from the ship and take you to a great wall or beijing city tour, then drop you to the ship, from my experiece, about 90USD P/p, you can do that. including tickets, private car, guide and local lunch.

This is one of those situations where you should consider spending the money and paying for a hotel in Beijing for 2 of those nights. Also with four of you to share the cost, getting private transport at least for the pick up from the port and drive to Beijing. With a morning arrival into Port, you'd probably be able to arrive in Beijing by mid-afternoon, in time to see one major sight before checking in at hotel for night #1. Next day a private van/driver for transport: morning for Great Wall (suggest Mutianyu) and afternoon another major sight. Night 2 in Beijing. Third morning another major sight then transport back to Tianjin arrive afternoon for reboarding for Night 3 on ship. Presumably you'd be leaving port morning of the following day. I think all of the associated costs for this sort of trip--if you choose Beijing hotel wisely--wouldn't be that much more than GBP 145 per person that the ship tour wants for an 11-hour GW trip.

Two things are certain: Beijing is too far away to make this a daily commute and stay shipboard each night. And Tianjin doesn't have enough to keep you interested for more than a few hours. The good stuff is all in Beijing.

Search the forum for similar posts. Look under the Activities tab in Things to Do for driver reviews. Browse the hotels section and use the interactive map feature. Mutianyu is the preferred section of the Great Wall for a short visit with private driver and you could be dropped off at the Summer Palace afterwards if you wish on the same day, though with such limited time it would not be high on my personal agenda.

If you go to the Beijing forum, many of your questions have been answered on the top questions section on the right side of that page. The first item is about the Great Wall. There has been a couple of drivers recommended there.

What time of year is this cruise? When you arrive into China might have a material difference in which sights to choose besides the GW and the Forbidden City. Do you know the sailing schedule as in when you are scheduled to arrive into Tianjin and when you are scheduled to leave (time of day-morning/afternoon/evening)? This will help with more precision on how to arrange the time you have most efficiently and get you back to ship in good time but not too early.
