Villages/Towns to Visit in route to Mutianyu?

Are there any small towns/villages in route to or that could be combined with a trip to Mutianyu Great Wall that would be worthwhile as long as I have a driver anyway? I am a tourist travelling to Beijing for 4 days & have never been to China. I am taking a day trip to Mutianyu and was hoping to combine a stop off or two at a small town/village to get a different flavor of the Country, even if there aren't many tourist sites to see. Don't think I can spare a separate full day for Cuandixia or the like. Thank you very much for any advice you can offer!!!

Have done this trek a few times now and never saw anything worth a stop.

Cuandixia is ok but it is an all day affair and at the opposite end of Beijing.

Hard to see villages around big cities like Beijing.

Hongluosi (Red Snail Temple) is quite close to Mutianyu and could make a decent addition to round out a daytrip. Most of the villages in this general area of Beijing municipality are frankly, not all that interesting. Maybe from Mutianyu go further west down the X009 road towards Nanyecun then to the S213 road which will take you over to the Huanghua Great Wall access area, then down to Jiudu Hecun (village) in a valley south of the Dafoshan Mountain area. This is a winding road through the hills and about 30 km, might take better part of an hour.

Make sure to discuss this in advance with driver (or agency providing same) since indirect routes add to fuel cost and the entire plan needs to be clear up front so there aren't misunderstandings about time and cost parameters.

You could stop at Mutianyu Village. Its not spectacular, but a living breathing small regional village. The Huairou area ( where Mutianyu is located ) is also quite a bit of pretty countryside. Taking the small detour to Hongluosi will be nice just for the drive.

About two years ago somebody had mentioned that there are four villages near the Mutianyu Great Wall : Mutinanyu, Beigou, Xinying and Tianxianyu.

He said that these villages are a microcosm of Chinese rural life and friendly places.
