I guess most people who do a day trip to Xi'an go there and return by night train. That leaves you time to see Xi'an.

If you fly you will loose a lot of time for just the traveling. But you can fly the evening before and take an hotel. You can ask the hotel about tours, or have a look on the internet. Take an evening flight back. Just store most of your luggage in the Beijing hotel.

You need to understand that while this is technically doable, Xi'An is not close and you'll spend most of your day on transportation. Not a good idea at all.

Not a good idea. If you are considering flying you will lose to much time in transiting. Its best to stay overnight.

If you are going to Xi'an specifically to see the Terracotta Warriors, and want to do it as a day trip. consider taking the night sleeper train from Beijing to Xi'an and getting an evening flight back to Beijing. Or vis versa.

If you want a tour company that can organize this for you look at: http://www.travelchinaguide.com/ They can organize private tours but their cost will be more than DIY.

If you do not mind join in a group to have the day trip, you can choose to have a bus tour in Xian, which is more cheaper than a private trip.

For the transportation, overnight soft-sleeper train can be an option since it is more cost effective.
