Taipa Island and Macau city is just separated by a long bridge... takes about 5-7 minutes (never actually timed it, but I am guessing that's how long it felt) to cross by bus or taxi.

The prices of hotels on Taipa Island seem to be more affordable.

Best is to choose a hotel that best suits your needs and budget.

From Taipa, you have to spend more time travelling to and from most places of interest, while on Macau itself you can walk most places, even with a 6 year old in tow. There are some quite reasonably priced hotels on Macau peninsula (from Sunday thru Thursday nights; at weekends ALL Macau hotels are expensive).

Relax and eat? My kind of stuff! If you want to avoid the crowds like me, I always choose Taipa hotels after experiencing staying at Macau hotels. Stayed the first few times at Holiday Inn Macau, but then I discovered Grandview Taipa for my succeeding trips. Stayed there the last two times.

They have a reqular shuttle to the Ferry terminal. Also has stops at the Macau Tower, etc. You can also walk to the Taipa Food Street.

Relaxing, eating, looking around ... you could easily spend a couple of weeks in Macau and still have things to do next time you come back :-)

I would still recommend Macau peninsula over Taipa though. Reasonably priced hotels that are away from the casinos & red light areas include Royal, Guia, Riviera (Ritz), and the best of the lot, Pousada Mong Ha. Fu Hua, New Golden Gate or Victoria would also be okay although in busier areas, but are mainly for mainland tourists, so little English is likely to be spoken by staff.

Yeah, very expensive and absolutely huge, also inconvenient for getting to anywhere else in Macau! If you check it out in the hotel reviews section of TA you can discover more about it. If you are planning on 5* luxury, the Wynn would be much more convenient, and if you don't mind luxury being a bit more old-fashioned, Mandarin Oriental would be better value.

But if you only plan to use the hotel for sleeping, and maybe eating breakfast any of the hotels mentioned in earlier posts would be perfectly adequate, and heaps more convenient than the Venetian.

The Riviera used to be called the Ritz; the name was changed quite recently.
