Day trips from Hong kong

Going to HK in 3 weeks. Aside from the must see attractions in HK, are there any must go to day trips ? Is Macau worth visiting ? What about Schenzen ? Dongguan ? Anything that cannot be missed ?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

If you cross the border to Shenzhen you will probably need a visa. People go to Shenzhen for cheap shopping, massages and food. There are also a couple of theme parks there.

A better day, or overnight trip, would be to Macau. There you have some excellent museums, delicious food and wine, and wonderful walking tours through old Macau. There are also a couple of casinos if you are interested in that. Many nationalities do not need a visa for Macau.

How long are you here for? If it is a relatively short trip I agree that you are better off with visiting HK's outer islands and an overnight trip to Macau.

Many people do enjoy the novelty of a day trip to Shenzhen and don't veture further than LuoHu Commercial Centre.

OTH, if you have a longer stay in HK then it might be worth getting a full Chinese visa and doing a short tour of the Pearl River Delta. - eg Shenzhen-Guangzhou-Zhuhai-Macau-HK.

What have you already included? As zhuhai2007 mentioned, the outer islands like Lamma Island: discoverhongkong.com/eng/attractions/outlyin… and Cheung Chau Island are worth visiting: discoverhongkong.com/eng/attractions/outlyin… You'll find that HK Extras is packed with tons of info, including info on the outer islands, how to get to Macau, etc., with images and details on transport for most sights/attractions too, which is worth checking out. See here for info on the outer islands: www.hongkongextras.com/explore_islands.html You could also consider Sha Tin: hongkongextras.com/explore_shatin_wongshek_s… for the Ten Thousand Buddhas, etc., Sai Kung: http://www.hongkongextras.com/_sai_kung.html , etc., if that's of any interest. If there's horse racing on at Sha Tin, you could perhaps group some of the Sha Tin sights together.

Good luck with your planning and have an AMAZING time in HK! :)

Thank you all for your feedback, much appreciated. I will be in HK for 6 full days. My husband will be working 5 out of 6 days so i will discover the city on my own. I am hoping to go to the Big Buddha, the peak, Star Ferry, Jade market, Hollywood road, flower market, Chin Lin nunnery, Ngong Ping 360, Po Lin monastery, Temple street market, Wong Tai Sin temple, Ten thousand buddhas monastery.

My husband will be going to Schenzen for 1 day (work) as well as Dongguan another day (work) that was why i was wondering if the visit was worth it. Obviously i would rather go somewhere that is worth it so those 2 destinations can be removed altogether from my itinerary and replaced with better suggestions. I am hoping to make the most of my visit to HK. Whatever suggestions or recommendations you may have are most welcome.

Thanks !

In your situation I would skip Shenzhen and Dongguan and visit Macau instead. The old colonial part of town is well worth walking around, and there are a few excellent museums, some very old temples and of course the modern pleasure palaces (casino hotels). You could very easily spend 2 days-one night in Macau while he is doing his field trip, and you will enjoy it a lot more.
