Hotel Help- Intercontinental or Hotel Icon

any suggestions on hotels for Hong Kong. We are looking for something that is right around the $200 a night price range and it a great location. I was drawn to Hotel Icon because it was new but a lot of people said the Intercontinental was a better location. Any help would be great appreicated!

There are 2 InterContinentals in Hong Kong -- The IC Hong Kong and the IC Grand Stanford. The IC Hong Kong is in a great location at the foot of Nathan Road and on the harbour, but it's very unlikely that you'll find a room there for $200. The IC Grand Stanford is a lesser hotel in a lesser location.

..............and the Hotel Icon is situated close to the InterContinental Grand Stanford but its location is not as good, set a little further back from the harbour, almost right next to the entrance to the Cross-Harbour Tunnel. Hotel Icon is situated on Hong Kong Polytechnic University campus, in the same building as the university's School of Hotel and Tourism Management and University House, which occupy the lower floors of the building. The hotel occupies the upper 19 floors of the 28-storey building.

As Don says, IC Hong Kong has the best location but it's doubtful that it will be within your budget.

You probably have no chance of getting Intercon at Salisbury for USD200. You can get Intercon Grand Stanford for that price. Hotel Icon is brand new so I don't know much about it. My guess is you can expect decent rooms but service might be a bit spotty during the initial period.

Location-wise, there is really very little between Icon and Grand Stanford. You can walk between the two in a couple of minutes. If you decide on Icon, then learning to use the Cross Harbour Tunnel buses could be of great advantage.

I had the impression that the Hotel Icon is staffed by students at the Hotel Management school. Does anyone know if this is correct?

Yes, its a training hotel staffed by students from the PolyU School of Hotel and Tourism Management. The building was formerly the university's staff quarters building, which has been completely renovated. The hotel is of 5-star standard and has been controversial because it was granted only a nominal land use transfer fee by the government instead of an estimated market rate of HK$300 million, prompting claims of unfair competition fron neighbouring hotels.

The exterior of Hotel Icon certainly looks nice and modern and that's about all I can tell you at this point.

To elaborate further on transportation, the hotel is within a few minutes walk to the cross harbour bus stops. You can take one of those buses to Hong Kong Island and get to your destination within 10-15 minutes max even with traffic. You can also take the ones to Mong Kok and be at the heart of MK in 5-10 minutes depending on traffic. The train station is also very close.
