hong kong international airport - one location?

I have not been to hong kong for more than 20 years, so have never visited the 'new' international airport. My question is: is it one airport? or are there locations in differet parts of the city? Just want to be sure as I'm flying 2 different airlines.

Hello mountaingirl2

Yes, the HKIA is one single airport! There is more than one terminal but everything (at least check-in) can be reached by walking, unlike many of the giant airports you find in the UK, Europe and the USA for example.

Only one commercial airport, one location. Wouldn't you believe... that they kept the HKG IATA airport code. One day back in 1998... overnight they switched from the old Kai Tak Airport to the new Chek Lap Kok Airport.

If you are transiting through HKG and you are checked through (so you don't have to claims your bags at HKG and you have your onward boarding pass), then the transit process is simple. Just show your boarding pass and passport at the transit security point, re-clear security and you will be on your way.

If you are not checked-through so you have to reclaim your bags and re-check, that also means you have to go through immigration. In that case, you should allow 2.5 to 3 hours between your two flights to make sure you have time to complete the process.

There are 2 terminals in HKIA, linked by footbridge. All arrivals are in Terminal 1 and airlines check-in counters are in Terminal 1 & 2. Pls let us know which 2 airlines you are travelling with so we can tell you which terminal you should go.

Just to reiterate though, if you are checked through, you will always be using T1 so the check-in terminal is not an issue.

In that case, I don't think you will be able to check through as HK Airlines is a budget airline, and they likely don't have an interline agreement with Qantas.

First, you need to allow at least 2.5 to 3 hours between your flights.

Once you land, go through immigration, pick up your bags, and go through customs. Allow 30-45 minutes just to be conservative. Exit customs into the arrival hall, then take the lift or the escalator up to the departure hall. HK Airlines is now in Terminal 1 as well so you won't have to go far. Their counters are located at aisle K toward the end of the hall. Check-in, drop off your bags, and clear security.

Note that if your gate number is between 33 to 80, you should take the monorail shuttle to get to your gate quicker. If your gate is 500 or above, you will need to head down to a satellite terminal and get to your plane via a bus so allow extra time.

Both Qantas and HK airlines are in Terminal 1, mountaingirl, If you're not checking through your whole journey you collect your bags, go through custom and go up to the departure hall (one level above the arrival hall) for next flight check-in. Check-in counters of HK Airlines are at Aisle K.

Its an airport with 2 Terminals but only one railway and bus station. So you cannot get lost. Just some service - like baggage storage or shops are duplicate in the 2 Terminals. There is also free wifi on the Airport and the Airport is 24 hour open. There is railway, bus and ship connection to Hong Kong City and also to the chinese boder.

Between the Terminals its a short walk inside the hall, around 10 min.

Its as one of the best airports of the world ranked.

happy trip
