Where is the nearest place to exchange in Wan Chai or Tsim Tsa Chui?

Traveller Cheques are really dinosaur and are most fitting in a museum. Very few travellers use them these days. You should be able to cash them at banks with proper identification. The commission charge may be quite expensive.

Consider using major credit cards and ATM card associated with some of the major international network such as Plus and Cirrus to withdraw cash from a local ATM machine.

I second what Teddy said. Travellers Cheques has become a hassel to use in Hong Kong. Banks accept them for exchange, but with high fees that you probably are not willing to pay and poor exchange rates. Even American Express itself had closed their branch in Hong Kong (used to be in Central if I remember correctly)...

Use cash, use ATM, use credit card.

Borrow, rob, steal... ;) LOL

AMEX office at Henley Bldg(Central) did offer the best exchange rates, and cashed personal cheques at the same great rates with no fee and almost a month to actually clear those cheques. Didn't know it's since been closed.

Or another option, is a travel card in Hong Kong dollars issued by most banks plus Travelex. Upload money onto card prior to leaving and confirm the exchange rate at that point. Then just withdraw as usual at an ATM.This way you avoid fluctuations in the exchange rate. PIN protected so entirely secure.

One thing to remember Sushi, when using your Debit card, is that most UK banks will charge you a transaction fee per withdrawal, normally around about 3%.

If you take cash, you will get a better rate from the money change booths in the depths of ChungKing Mansions, than you will in the banks and you will get a far better rate changing money in the banks in HK than you will here in the UK
