Macau - is it worth it?

While in Hong Kong with my wife, we are thinking of making a day trip to Macau. I have read a few good things about it. Neither of us a really into gambling, so we don't have much interest in the casinos there. Just wondering if people who have been there think it is worth the expense and worth sacrificing a day in Hong Kong to go? Thanks.

Absolutely and highly recommended. I was there last November and was truly impressed! There are a lot of things to see other than the casinos. The city was very clean and the population very polite.

Contact the Macau Government Tourist Office for a Macau Guide Book in advance to plan your trip.

While I was in Hong Kong last year - I also did a day-trip to Macu. It's only an hour to get there from Hong Kong via Turbojet. I didn't join any tours, I just asked for a complimentary map of Macau and strolled down the street.

I visited Senado Square, Ruins of St. Paul and Mount Fortress - you could do all this in half a day.

You also do not need a VISA to visit Macau if you're from US or Canada. Hong Kong dollars are accepted in Macau so you don't have to worry about getting local currency.

Have a good trip!

Definitely worth it. Although it's just 1 hour away by ferry, you will feel you have been transported to another world. It's very beautiful in Macau, very small, but for 1 day visit, you will enjoy it for sure.

Recently, the "fisherman's wharf" opened, definitely worthy of seeing, taking photos.

I don't gamble either, no interest in the casinos whatsoever. But Macau's sights, culture, and especially all the yummy local eateries and foods, should keep you VERY busy and satisfied for 1 day. I actually recommend staying overnight to avoid rushing.....

Hi Ranford!

Just came from Macau three weeks ago for a 4day/3night holiday. And its my third Macau trip in the last 18 months! I've frequented Hong kong in the past and planned on making a day trip to Macau but never got to do it. So in November 2004 I took my 73 yr old mom for a 3 day 2 night holiday and really had fun! Like you were not into gambling. We enjoyed the sites, culture, the FOOD(!), and the overall much laid back atmosphere which is a far contrast to Hong kong. We basically had just a full day but we were able to see a lot of tourist must see spots.

Our second trip was again with my mom and my eldest brother the last week of March 2005. During that trip we made it a point to visit the old Catholic churches and some other sites we werent able to visit before.

My trip three weeks ago was a different experience! Together with a husband and wife couple, we stayed at Taipa island which is just about a 10-15 min ride from the Macau city center. And oh it was great to see another side of Macau! Plenty of good food again! Being their tour guide, I was able to give them a Macau sampler in just half a day. Its fairly easy to get around. If you dont have the luxury of time, take a cab to move around the city. Like what others have posted, go to Senado Square and take it from there to see the must spots. Brochures are available at the tourist counters at the ferry terminal. You'll be able to get info also from the Hong kong What's On magazine which you'll be able to find in your room at the major Hong kong hotels.

Oh, and during these three trips to Macau, we cross to Hongkong for the day. :) not the other way around.

I agree with the others, Macau is worth a day trip; by Turbojet ferry, you can leave early, return late, and I personally found it most time and cost effective to simply pick a bus tour from the touts which were all around the arrival ferry dock areas.

The only caution I would add is the obvious one; if you spend a day in Macau you will presumably be sacrificing a day in Hong Kong. Only you can determine what that means for you. If you have the option of simply adding another day you would not have otherwise spent in Asia, I think it is well worth it.
